Tesla CEO and richest man in the world, Elon Musk, said in an email that no longer wants Tesla employees to work remotely. According to materials leaked through Bloomberg and Electrek portals, company executives should stay at least 40 hours at Tesla offices. When asked by Twitter, he did not deny that he sent emails.

Moreover, Elon Musk categorically stated that anyone who disagrees “I have to pretend I work elsewhere”. The content of the messages also states that anyone who is not satisfied with the order should “leave Tesla.” In addition, the 40-hour stay at the company’s offices refers to the “official Tesla office” and not to remote offices located elsewhere. In a second email with the subject line: “To be clear,” the CEO stated that anyone not showing up would be interpreted as resigning.

However, the CEO said in an email – as you can see in the excerpt reproduced on Twitter – that he is willing to make exceptions for some employees. “FROMand if there is any particular outstanding member for whom this is not possible, I will review and approve these exceptions directly.”

CEO says home office model doesn’t make good products

Elon Musk also pointed out in emails that the fact that he “practically lives” at Tesla was one of the reasons for the company’s success and that: “Of course, there are companies that do not require this. [trabalho presencial], but when was the last time you released a big new product? It’s been a long time”. Based on the content of the letter, we can assume that the CEO believes that face-to-face work is fundamental to the success of companies. Below you can see the emails sent by Musk and published by Electrek in full.

  • Email 1 – Subject: Remote work is no longer acceptable. “Anyone who wants to stay remote has to be in the office for a minimum (I mean *minimum*) 40 hours a week or leave Tesla. This is less than we ask factory workers. If there are any specific exceptional members for whom this is not possible, I will review and approve those exceptions directly. Also, the “office” must be an official Tesla office, not a remote branch located elsewhere, such as being in charge of human relations at a Fremont plant but having an office in another state. Thanks Elon.
  • email 2 – Subject: For clarity. “Every Tesla employee is required to spend at least 40 hours a week in the office. In addition, the office should be where your real colleagues are, and not some pseudo-remote office. If you don’t show up, we’ll assume you quit. The older you are, the greater your presence should be. That’s why I lived so much in the factory – so that those on the assembly line could see me working next to them. If I had not done this, Tesla would have gone bankrupt long ago. Of course, there are companies that don’t require it, but when was the last time you released a big new product? It’s been a long time. Tesla created, will create and will produce the most interesting and significant products of any company on Earth. This will not happen without dedication. Thanks Elon.
