Let’s start with the more compact Focus. We repeat that for years the Russians knew and loved the model, but the Koreans began to pressure the Americans and declared themselves louder and louder. Therefore, the confidence in the “Focus” among our customers is still shaken. And in 2019 the model completely left the Russian market.
It seems that the company did much better in Europe, but even there demand started to fall. Let’s say that in May 2022, “Focuses” sales fell by 28%. Such failures can be attributed to problems caused by the disruption of supply chains by covid and the current crisis, but management doesn’t seem happy about this.
According to Automotive News Europe, the automaker’s board, citing its own sources, has decided to cut production of Focuses at its plant in the German city of Zarlui from the end of August. At the same time, the entire investment program for the company has been shortened and they will not modernize. All this suggests that the factory will simply close and that the fourth-generation Ford Focus will be discontinued in Europe. The model is of course salvageable, but not in its traditional form, but as an electric car. We do not rule out that it will be given a different name.
There are many reasons for the ever-popular Focus’s failure. This is the appearance of fragile “robots” PowerShift and bizarre low-volume engines. And the ergonomics of the car have not changed for the better. The first two generations were generous, but the third failed. The trunk and opening fell prey to the design. The saloon has become cramped, although it has added style. All this buried the bestseller of the market.
The VW Passat has long been the benchmark of the D-segment car. The sedan received this title already in the 90s, but then the model gradually began to become more and more prestigious. As a result, it was “driven” to premium and Passat just became unavailable to the average buyer. And what accessibility can we talk about if the car competes with the BMW 3 Series in terms of price and equipment.
The appearance of technological supercharged TSI engines and DSG robotic transmissions contributed to the beginning of the end of the model. The former were very demanding on the quality of the fuel, and the boxes broke and had to be overhauled. Problems with DSG have only been solved relatively recently. However, people still remember the “jambs” of the past.
By the way, in Europe, the sale of the Passat also did not please the Germans: until recently, the model found 200,000 buyers annually, but in 2021 only 80,000 cars were sold. Therefore, the Volkswagen concern abandoned the sedan in Europe.
