In Russia, the number of car thefts has fallen sharply, despite the “horror stories” from insurers

In March of this year, the All-Russian Union of Insurers terrified car owners with an extremely negative forecast: the country predicted a sharp rise in the number of thefts in a published press release. They say the cars will be “taken away” to be disassembled into spare parts that have become scarce. That’s just the promised rampant crime, it seems, hasn’t happened.

From January to April 2022, the police registered 2,380 thefts, which is 21% less than last year. Such data is published by the newspaper Kommersant with reference to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. So insurers’ “horror stories” have not only failed to materialize, but have failed miserably: Crime rates are falling, not growing.

On the other hand, the published statistics only cover thefts, but say nothing about the theft of parts – wheels, catalytic converters, mirrors and the like. And with that, according to social networks, things are terrifying: Not only “little things”, but even hoods are being removed from cars.

According to insurance company Rosgosstrakh, the number of such crimes has risen by 47% since the beginning of the year. The AvtoVzglyad portal tells you how to make sure your car is protected against theft of spare parts and equipment.
