A stream of guests from neighboring Lithuania poured into the Republic of Belarus: since the beginning of the year, 124,000 citizens of the Baltic country have crossed the border between Lithuania and Belarus, four times more than last year. Most travelers do not discount the fact that they go for cheap fuel, cigarettes and groceries.

As a result, Lithuanian customs believe that such “tours” undermine the country’s economy: some irresponsible citizens, according to customs officials, travel to Belarus almost every week to refuel their cars and buy cheap products.

– For our part, we must assess the potential risks and dangers of illegal trade, – said the head of Lithuanian customs Darius Zvironas.

According to Mr Zhvironos, the nearest plans by the local authorities are to tighten up controls on people and vehicles often crossing the external border.

In turn, the Belarusian State Border Committee assumes that Lithuania will intentionally create queues at the border so that people’s “shopping tours” become less attractive.

For reference, we note that if in Lithuania a liter of “ninety-fifth” costs 2 euros 18 cents, in Belarus you can fill up with gasoline for 86 cents.

By the way, not all Blue-eyed guests can refuel with cheap fuel, for example, European truck drivers are forced to “refuel” with fabulously expensive diesel.
