The notoriously high cost of gasoline and the general decline in living standards are slowly returning part of Russian society to methods of survival more typical of the late last century. It’s about petty theft of gasoline. “Classic” with fuel drains from parked cars is not considered in this case. Plus, it only works on outright junk like the Zhiguli. A new method used by thieves is used at gas stations when the car owner is filling up his car.
The driver inserts a filling nozzle into the filling neck of the passenger car and pays for fuel at the operator’s kiosk. At this point, an intruder loitering nearby approaches the car and rearranges the gun from the gas tank in his van. While the car owner completes the financial settlement with the gas station operator and goes to his car, the refueling process begins and fuel is poured into the thief’s jerry can.
When the driver approaches, the attacker stops his drain operation and quickly retreats (unnoticed by the victim if possible). When the car owner decides to linger in the store at the gas station or go to the toilet, the thief has a chance to completely fill the entire tank with free fuel. In most cases, the “catch” of such a one-time action is not great for a crook – a liter or two of gasoline.
But if you run the operation several times, the result will be quite satisfactory – a full canister of stolen fuel. They usually don’t steal gasoline in this way for sale, but to fill their vehicle. Or in exchange for a drink. Legally, this is a frivolous crime, because the damage is too small. Even if 10 liters are disposed of at once from a careless car owner, his financial losses will be less than 1000 rubles.
What is qualified as petty theft, for which only punishable under administrative law: according to art. 7.27 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. Either a fine of 1000-5000 rubles, or up to 15 days of arrest. For the bundled contingent that trades this way, it doesn’t matter at all. In addition, criminals try to choose female drivers or older drivers as victims. That is, those who are clearly incapable of chasing and detaining the thief. The scheme works at gas stations where there are no tank employees, who usually quickly get rid of uninvited “customers”.
