Why do some car owners spray their license plates with hairspray?
The driver’s “need” is difficult to catch up with. Also when it comes to using the most unexpected items and devices in car life. The AvtoVzglyad portal found out what native drivers have found for a common cosmetic product.

The author of these lines quite recently, while driving in a traffic jam past one of the open parking lots, drew attention to the car owner, who carefully sprayed hair styling product from a can onto the license plate of his car. For obvious reasons, it was not possible to ask the citizen about the meaning of his manipulations. But the situation intrigued us and we decided to “dig up the subject”. However, no serious investigation was necessary.

A survey of a dozen known car owners found that “hairspray for license plates” is a fairly common technology. It turns out that some motorists believe that the varnish applied to the license plate of the car after drying can in some cases prevent the identification of the GRP by the police camera of automatic fixation. The fine for traffic violations does not come later. Reportedly, a layer of varnish sparkles in the sun, making the alphanumeric combination difficult to read. At the same time, living traffic cops have no claims against the car owner, since the car number covered with hairstyling agent is no different from the untreated one.

Of course, it cannot be ruled out that under some rare circumstances and a certain relative position of the car, the camera and the sun, a “lacquer-like” glare can still appear and make something difficult there. But the problem with the technology described above is that most modern complexes for the automatic elimination of traffic violations also have infrared lighting and are equipped with a matrix sensitive to radiation in the infrared range. Since the paint doesn’t really shine in infrared light, there’s no point covering the license plate with it to mask cameras – it’s no use.

Nevertheless, there is still some practical significance in treating numbers with hairspray. If you apply a sufficiently thick layer of this product, it can serve as the only protection for the GRP paint. For example, if you are planning a drive on roads where a lot of dust, sand and small stones are expected to fly into the “snout” of your car, it makes sense to pour hairspray not only on the license plate, but also on the front of the car. hood cover, forward-facing parts of the front fenders, A-pillars and other body parts that suffer from such abrasive road surfaces.
