Changed shoes: why the authorities decided to abruptly switch Russians to “irrelevant” electric vehicles

In 2019, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Denis Manturov, said he considers electric vehicles completely irrelevant — not just for Russia, but for the whole world. Nevertheless, the authorities nevertheless launched a large-scale campaign to popularize “green” transport, giving the owners and manufacturers of “electric trains” certain preferences. But why? What has changed in such a short time? These questions were answered by the experts of the AvtoVzglyad portal.

Three years ago, in response to a question about electric vehicles, Mr. Manturov stressed that the production and disposal of electric cars are too “dirty” processes, and this negates all their “environmental benefits”. Moreover, our country is not ready for “green” transport, neither because of the climatic conditions, nor because of the development of infrastructure, nor because of the mentality of citizens who are absolutely unwilling to switch to electric cars.

At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade admitted that he finds the development of gas engine technologies much more promising for Russia. However, instead of promoting the widespread introduction and distribution of “natural” fuel – a real alternative to petrol and diesel – authorities have moved towards electrification. The one that was called irrelevant a few years ago. Why did this happen?

— The European, Chinese and American experience of popularizing electric cars has changed the automotive world beyond recognition, and Russia cannot stay away from world trends and globalization. And no matter what they say, we will still have electric cars. The government understands this, and is therefore developing all kinds of support measures and everything else, – an electric vehicle expert explained during his speech at the online conference of the AvtoVzglyad portal Alexey Shvaikov.

In general, the observer of the portal Drom agreed with him. Sergey Tsyganov. According to him, Russia is catching up with global progress, but the vector has been established quite a long time ago – even before Mr. Manturov reportedly put an end to “green” transport.

– I think our minister was a bit cunning when he said that electric cars are irrelevant. Even then, the development of an electromobilization program was in full swing, when measures were prepared to support specific manufacturers – notably the Zetta electric car, and some other failed projects. And since then all this led to some panic that the projects were announced, but there was no result, now the authorities, represented by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, are forced to support what they have, – noted Sergey Tsyganov.
