UAZ will not produce Chery crossovers

In early February, information appeared that Chery was considering the possibility of localizing the production of his crossovers in the facilities of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. And moments later, photos “leaked” to the network, confirming that the Chinese really “tried” the site. But these plans – unfortunately, but fortunately – are not destined to come true.

Chery abandoned the idea of partnering with the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant due to the fact that UAZ was subject to EU sanctions in early June, Vedomosti reports. The same, we remember, happened with KamAZ – in the West they believed that the equipment produced in these locations could be used by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. The Chinese, fearing secondary sanctions, do not need trouble and will therefore consider other options.

And they have them. For example, Chery could look at another Sollers Auto factory, for example the factory that produced Mazda cars in Vladivostok. Although it was previously reported that Geely became interested in this site. Or leave Sollers and explore the possibility of collaborating with someone else: GAZ, for example, is simply looking for a partner to take over Volkswagen’s freed-up capabilities.

After all, Chery could build up her own company, following the example of his fellow competitors Geely and Haval. Indeed, now that many foreign automakers have completely or partially shut down their operations in Russia, the Chinese have come forward – demand is growing rapidly, which means that the risks and costs of building a factory will most likely be justified. In addition, Chery is actively expanding: it launches not only new models, but also entire brands – Exeed, and now Omoda.
