The events of recent days on the foreign economic and political front provoked a stormy reaction from the media: the turbines for the Nord Stream got stuck in Germany and their planned repairs were discussed on all planes. Also “popular property” has already made its choice: Russia is waiting for the worldwide gasification of both real estate and movable property. Details are on the AvtoVzglyad portal.
On the last day of summer, Nord Stream-1 stopped – no gas will be supplied to Europe for at least a few days. The maximum is unknown. Alexey Miller, the head of Gazprom, spoke very clearly on this issue, saying that “our consumers, the Russians, will have access to a cheap and reliable source of energy. It is especially important to note that consumers in the domestic market have excellent opportunities to be optimistic about the country’s gas future.”
That is, it is not about days or even months. What does it mean? Yes, everything is simple and clear: the energy dispute with Europe, the main buyer of Russian gas, is moving the monopolist to the domestic market. And more importantly, when will the maneuver affect the prices and availability of gas stations for Russians?
Gas breaks records in the spot markets, crushes European economies based on cheap raw materials from Russia and sparks high-profile political scandals. The pipeline is actually clogged and on the border with Finland, which was completely dependent on Russian supplies but suddenly decided to become independent, a torch burns that costs 10 million euros a day. How do you stop burning and start earning? We will analyze all possible options.
The main route for gas imports was and remains the pipeline. If it doesn’t work, can the gas be liquefied to be sold to Asia, or made into processed products – the same fertilizers that are always in demand, or to build new pipelines, or for the domestic market. There are no other options.
Now let’s look at each option in more detail. Let’s start with LNG, of which so many have already broken. Firstly, we have extremely few facilities for liquefying gas, but in this direction things are definitely better than tankers to supply it. The construction of new ones – both enterprises and ships – is a question whose answer is calculated not so much in money as in years. It cannot be closed quickly. Build, but slowly. Need a faster way.
Nitrogen fertilizers are needed to increase crop yields, so an increase in the world population automatically leads to a higher demand for this product. They are made from ammonia, which is obtained by the reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen – part of methane. Nitrogen fertilizer production requires a lot of gas, so only a country that produces gas in large quantities can afford the luxury of a fertilizer plant.
Choice? Still some, but everything relies on the time continuum again – such ventures don’t settle as quickly as you’d like. Pipe to China?
We have one, it’s under construction. But many months will pass before the launch, during which the gas must also be flared and not exchanged for currency. Gas production cannot be suspended or delayed – pump and/or pump. The gas storage facilities are also filling up quickly and European ones, which until then belonged to Gazprom, were suddenly nationalized (but we are already talking about the establishment of private property).
So basically the gas monopolist has only one option: to develop the domestic market by gassing everything around it. Settlements, remote villages, all possible and impossible undertakings. And of course cars. This point looks particularly attractive because by building one gas station, you can quickly sell gas to many consumers at once. And how to force car owners to “gasify”?
First, making “blue fuel” is remarkably cheaper than gasoline, which is quite simple – now we just burn it. And secondly, to set up in the country a service for installing gas equipment on cars – cheap, reliable and unpretentious.
Which Gazprom – with its capabilities – is likely to do in the very near future. Yes, and a line of credit from Gazprombank for the reconstruction of the car certainly wouldn’t hurt. Mention a deadline? Alexey Miller already mentioned it: the Nord Stream gas pipeline will operate for up to 6-8 months without scheduled repairs. We are watching.
