On September 3, 2022, the first and only President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev was buried in Moscow. Post-Soviet citizens have different attitudes to the deceased – from love to hate, as they say. But the fact that this person at least tried to give the country a chance to become successful in all manufacturing sectors, including the automotive sector, is an undeniable fact. But how ended his intervention in the affairs of the auto industry, the AvtoVzglyad portal says.
Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev did not know much about cars, but he knew that the USSR auto industry needed help and sincerely wanted to give people decent equipment. He saw that the factories were in crisis and could not move forward. And he understood that we were failing in all areas, from design to technology.
And when D. Parfenov and G. Khainov hit the country in 1985 with two homemade Laura cars, MS Gorbachev not only admired, but also called both authors to the Kremlin, from where the homemade people came out as official employees of the new NAMI laboratory. It was made especially for them and immediately issued a state order for the construction of a car for the people.
In 1986, Gorbachev arrived in Togliatti and spoke the famous words: “VAZ must become a trendsetter in the global automotive industry.” After that, the company was awarded financing, and the factory finally received a training ground in Sosnovka, modernization and extensive body production. And MS Gorbachev gave his personal 1988 red Pontiac Grand Prix (a gift from GM presented by Ronald Reagan) to AZLK: “to learn.” But car factories responded with the usual bullshit. They believed neither in freedom, nor in their own strength, nor in the head of the capital.
GAZ slowly completed the long-term development approved by the State Planning Committee of the USSR – Gazelle, dismissing it as a revolutionary result of perestroika. The new “Volga” GAZ-3105 did not work at all for Nizhny Novgorod. GAZ justified the failed prototype design with lowered side windows and came up with an ugly legend that Raisa Gorbacheva rejected the car, saying, “My knees will be visible.” Although Raisa Maksimovna was not even aware of this car.
ZIL completely decided that it would be enough to make a new parade passenger car 4102. For the factory this was an old scheme: a new member carrier for the new general secretary. And, as expected, they slowly got to work, believing that the new leader of the party and the country is young, he is 30 years old on the throne and there is no need to rush. The ZIL car was never made, as it had mastered only two prototypes. VAZ and AZLK did not like Gorbachev at all. And they limited themselves to front-wheel drive models developed before perestroika. In Moscow at the time they suffered from Moskvich-2141, in Togliatti they fought with the import-dependent VAZ-2108. Both models had to be considered the brainchild of perestroika and the answer to care.
The biggest mistake of Comrade Gorbachev, like any leader of our country, that he thought the industry should be state-owned. This is not true. Industry only develops when it is private. Regardless of the direction. Automobile factories, defense companies, metallurgy, light industry and further on the list, until space should be private. Where an official takes over management, it turns out to be either expensive and bad, or expensive and meaningless, as in any factory in Russia. MS Gorbachev gave everyone a chance. Even car factories. And no one took advantage of it.
