We walked through the salons: how much does Kia, Hyundai, Skoda, VW and LADA cost budget
Somehow, everyone has heard that the Russian market for new passenger cars is in chaos: there is an acute shortage of cars, prices are skyrocketing. But in such circumstances is it realistic to find a running “state employee” in showrooms at an acceptable price, for example, Kia Rio, Skoda Rapid or LADA Granta with ABS? To find the answer to this question, the AvtoVzglyad portal took a walk through the capital’s car dealerships.

The joke that eventually all Russians will switch to the “Chinese” is becoming less funny by the day. It is plausible that the share of ‘heavenly’ brands will indeed only grow, although, despite political nuances, it is still too early to write off other manufacturers. As the experiment of the AvtoVzglyad portal showed, dealers stock cars, even popular and once affordable models. True, it is difficult to call them budget now.

KIA

First of all, we went to the Kia dealer to ask the price of the Rio sedan. But there was nothing to ask for the price: four-door, like the Rio X hatchback, are no longer for sale: all stocks are sold out and orders are not accepted, because the St. Petersburg factory has “frozen”. Instead of Rio, we got Ceed (from 2.5 million rubles, Slovak assembly), Cerato (from 2.5 million) and the baby Picanto in a “fat” configuration (from 2 million). But they warned that there was little time for reflection: even these cars are not produced and are not supplied from abroad: dealers work with leftovers.

HYUNDAIA

Along with Kia Rio, Hyundai Solaris and Creta took a break. And their production will not resume until March 2023, according to the advisor. True, unlike the Rio, Solaris is still available: a sedan in the basic version with a manual gearbox can be purchased from 1.9 million rubles, on average – from 2 million. But even here you have to think faster. If the dealer had 100 cars in stock at the beginning of August, there were already 60 by September. Most likely, Solaris will also disappear from the lineup by the end of the year.

SKODA

It’s even worse with the most budget-friendly Skoda – the Rapid Liftback. Compared to Solaris, it is now slightly cheaper: the dealer offered us a car on an “automatic” (“mechanics” is sold out) for 1.8 million rubles, taking into account the trade-in discount and cash payment. There isn’t much to choose from – there are only 4 cars in stock. An order can also not be left behind: the Kaluga VW plant, where Rapid and Polo are produced, went on “vacation” indefinitely and will return to work no earlier than 2023. If he comes back…

VOLKSWAGEN

Finding a Volkswagen Polo now seems to be easier. Despite the fact that the liftback has not been produced for several months, there are plenty of cars from Moscow dealers. The most affordable option, announced to us, is a car in the “hand”, in the average version with some “special stages” (including the “winter package”) for 1.7 million rubles. In addition, it came out at the end of 2021, for which the car dealer also lowered the price.

LADA

Of course we also visited the LADA showroom. First of all, they asked Granta with ABS (that is, the pre-crisis version): they are ready to give it in the “base” for 1 million rubles, in the “top” – for 1.1 million. Vesta in the simplest version of the “mechanics” can be purchased from 1,380,000 rubles – there are still such machines in stock. At the same time, Vesta NG is also offered, but only in the station wagon body (from 2.5 million). Sedans, as the consultant explained, does not allow the representative office to sell, although the exhibition copy shows off in the showroom.

…As we can see, even the once budget models are still in showrooms, but dealers’ stocks are running out. And despite the fact that none of the above brands has announced their intention to leave the Russian market, orders for cars are not accepted: factories are shut down, deliveries from abroad are frozen. The only exception is LADA – Togliatti residents with grief in half collect Granta without ABS and simplified Niva Travel and Niva Legend.

In fairness, we emphasize that the results of our experiment cannot be called accurate and fully reflect the real picture. After all, the situation can also differ within the framework of the metropolitan dealer network, not to mention the regions. Be that as it may, one thing is certain: anyone considering purchasing a brand-new “state employee” should really hurry up. And not just because prices are rising every month – cars are stupidly running out. And when supplies will resume, no one knows.
