No sooner had Toyota announced its intention to close the St. Petersburg plant when foreign media started talking about Mazda also planning to end car production in Russia. The reasons are the same: the company cannot resume work due to interruptions in the supply of components.
The Mazda Sollers joint venture will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2022: the plant opened in 2012 in Vladivostok. But it seems that at this point the history of cooperation between the Russian holding company and the Japanese car manufacturer will end. The assembly line has been frozen for several months and Mazda is now negotiating a complete cessation of car production in our country, the Nikkei newspaper reports.
The final decision has not yet been made: it is not known whether the Japanese will limit themselves to exiting the joint venture or also stop sales and exit the market. As for the plant itself, as the AvtoVzglyad portal wrote earlier, other car manufacturers are already actively interested in it. The freed up capacity could very well be taken up by the Chinese, say Geely or Chery.
We should add that the Mazda Sollers joint venture produced the Mazda6 sedan, as well as the CX-5 and CX-9 crossovers. In 2021, the factory assembled about 28,000 vehicles and by 2022 it aims to reach a volume of 30,000 units. But these plans were not destined to come true – the events in February led to a supply chain breach and an acute shortage of components.
