The Sollers plant in Yelabuga will produce light commercial vehicles under its own brand. This reports TASS, referring to the statement of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. It is noted that the machines will have a high degree of localization.
This was to be expected, because on the eve of the Ford group it announced that it would completely curtail its Russian activities and sell a 49% stake in the joint venture to Sollers. Admittedly, there is agreement on the option to repurchase the securities within five years. So the popular Ford Transit “leaves” us and new trucks take its place.
Rumor has it that these are cabover and semi-bonnet models with a gross weight of 2.5 to 4.5 tons, but of course there are no Russian developments. Under the Sollers nameplate we will see the products of the Chinese company JAC – Sunray vans and N25 trucks.
In theory, collecting “Chinese” instead of Ford Transit in the territory of the special economic zone “Alabuga” is not so difficult. After all, most manufacturers have long had standardized welding, painting and assembly processes. But Russian business, as always, has its own way.
So Alexander Pikulenko said at an online conference of the AvtoVzglyad portal that projects that fall into “hands” of Sollers do not always survive. According to the car expert, it is the Russian management that is responsible for this.
Now a new management team has joined the company, so it is not yet clear how they will operate. But it is very likely that the situation will not change.
Auto expert Sergei Burgazliev agreed with Pikulenko that no joint venture at Sollers was effective. Especially in the field of strategic development. The alliance with FIAT fell apart, with Ford and Mazda the story is the same. Therefore, Sollers will only exist at the expense of the old model range. First of all, this is equipment from Ulyanovsk.
As for the project with JAC, it will be successful in the first pair simply because there are no alternatives. Perhaps even in a few years, Asian trucks under the Sollers brand will “bite” a certain market share from the GAZ group. But strong strategic results will depend on build quality, partnership with the dealer network and government contracts.
We would like to add on our own behalf that this is precisely where the big questions are now at play. Therefore, the prospects for a new joint venture look dim. If the quality of the business operations does not change, the Chinese will quickly move to another partner. Let’s say, in the factory in Moskvich.
