OUR TeslaThe company, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, confirmed this Friday (28) that it will start clearing 70 hectares, about 688,000 m² of forest in Germany, to expand one of its factories.

The action goes against the latest decisions of a company that stores renewable solar energy to be “greener”.

Tesla Gigafactory from Germany

This huge expansion is taking place on the outskirts of Berlin, in Grünheide, a green and wooded area that covers 300 hectares in Germany. The space will be used to expand the production capacity of the Tesla Gigafactory. On Friday evening, it was already possible to see how the company’s employees with equipment cut down trees.

Ecologists and associations for the protection of nature in Brandenburg have criticized the deforestation. “There are always work interruptions that pose a risk to people and the environment.” Recently, at the end of September, a fire broke out at the Tesla factory. They still don’t have a working fire alarm system.

But local authorities believe the expansion is positive for the region, Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach stressed. “Brandenburg is increasingly becoming an important location for Germany’s modern automotive industry, and Tesla, as the largest industrial employer and trainer in Brandenburg, has played a decisive role in this.”

The state government of Brandenburg also welcomes Tesla’s plans. “With the announcement of the next phase of the car plant expansion, Tesla is clearly committed to the Brandenburg location,” Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke said Friday.

For expansion, all necessary measures to protect fauna and flora have been implemented or are in the process of being implemented.

Tesla currently employs more than 7,000 people, of which about 50% of current employees live in Berlin and about 40% in Brandenburg, with the rest working remotely worldwide.
