Which “Soviet” life hacks can save you a lot on the maintenance of a modern foreign car?
The departure of European, Korean and Japanese car manufacturers from the Russian market, which seems almost inevitable, makes it increasingly illusory for most of our compatriots to switch from an old foreign car to a new one. Willy-nilly, we will have to drive our “tired” cars for a long time and try with all our might to extend their life. That is why the AvtoVzglyad portal advises to refresh the memory of the technical methods of the owners of cars who traveled along the roads of the USSR.

Until recently, the anti-corrosion treatment of their cars was mainly the lot of the owners of very old cars. Or vehicles prone to corrosion after not very high quality repairs. But in the era of the USSR, personal cars almost always had to be covered with a special composition – to extend their service life.

As we return to some extent to a similar situation in the automotive industry, anti-corrosion is once again becoming a “must have” procedure for the owner of a passenger car – so that it no longer rusts.

What breaks down the fastest in even the most modern car? The correct answer is suspension parts. Both “native” components and “non-original” components now cost a lot. In the USSR, in order to change ball joints less often, craftsmen came up with the idea of prolonging their life with a simple act. They drew attention to the fact that the lubricant in the support wears out over time, after which the whole thing quickly “dies”. To delay this moment, a thick compound of a suitable specification was forced under the rubber boot for a long time, not a new “ball” with a special syringe. This technique is worth remembering even now when servicing foreign cars – it certainly will not be worse.

Back in the day, you probably didn’t care that much about chips and little “scratches” on the body. Like, before I sell them in a trade-in, I’ll polish them – no one will notice, did you think? And now you need to make sure that such a “little thing” does not cause the development of rust – of course, you will have to drive this car for a long time. In the USSR, a similar problem was easily solved. Chips and scratches were gently instilled with a thick anti-corrosion compound such as Movil. This method saved the development of rusty “sores”, although it required periodic repetition of the procedure after washing the car.

Now in Russia there is no shortage of “windshield wipers” for cars, but their constant wear and tear regularly requires the purchase of new ones – when the old dirty dregs along the “windshield” begin to deliver instead of everything strange to remove from it. In order not to spend extra money, you can revive the windshield wipers in the Soviet way. To restore the elasticity of the “rubber bands”, they must be put in gasoline or kerosene for an hour. Frame “windshield wipers” sometimes begin to be poorly cleaned because their hinges lose their original mobility due to corrosion and badly press the wiper against the work surface. To resuscitate the “wiper” mechanism, it is enough to “splash” the frame from a can of WD-40.
