Against the background of other Chinese brands that have developed crazy activities in the Russian market, GAC looks more than modest. Marketing activity is minimal. We don’t know what this is about. Nevertheless, the AvtoVzglyad portal decided to get acquainted with the most compact representative of the brand in the domestic market – the GAC GS5.
Immediately make a caveat that it is fundamentally wrong in the full sense of the word to call the GAC GS5 a “little one”. In terms of wheelbase length (2710 mm), it is a direct competitor of, for example, Tiggo 8 Pro, Geely Atlas or say Kia Sportage. That’s quite a dimensional car. In terms of appearance, the latest electric cars and cars from “premium Chinese brands” naturally look more fashionable in comparison. But if you don’t need a concept car from the latest Shanghai Auto Show, but a normal everyday car, the GAC GS5 is a good option.
It’s hard to talk about some notable exterior design breakthroughs. Solid, from the point of view of external beauties, the middle peasant. It is enough that the GS5 doesn’t look, unlike many of its Chinese counterparts, like a UFO executed by an impressionist drug addict and not like a collection of “quotes” from the outside of the most profitable models of half of the world’s car manufacturers simultaneously.
The interior of this crossover is also no-frills, compared to the freshest examples of “premium Chinese brands”. This is not a fashionable “trolley for carrying a dozen TVs” – you won’t find a “board monitor” here on a half “sill” under the windshield.
But for a normal car owner, a switch ‘cleaned up’ with a color screen of the on-board computer is now sufficient. Like the classic multimedia system monitor on the center console with a diagonal of eight inches. Perhaps only the design betrays the Chinese origin of the car. Everything else in the interior of the GS5 would look very organic in the shadow of a Korean or Japanese car brand.
What the latter would not afford is the absence of a heated steering wheel in trim levels that are comparable to this GAC in terms of options wealth. “Leather interior”, video cameras, all kinds of driver aids, an electric drive for the fifth door, and so on. At the same time, the Chinese took pity on the non-ferrous metal on the “heater” of the steering wheel … It’s already cold! And driving with gloves is uncomfortable.
Another peculiarity of the GS5 is related to the organization of the heating of the front. He’s here – his threads in the thickness of the glass are perfectly visible. But there is no option control button in the cab! It is possible that the electric heating of the glass is turned on by a key that starts the maximum airflow on it. But I did not manage to test the above hypothesis in practice – during the test drive there were no serious icing on the car.
The GS5 is exclusively front-wheel drive. Of the real “crossover” attributes, there is only a “ring” for controlling the operating modes of the six-speed “automatic” – near the selector lever. In addition to the “eco” and “normal” modes, it also has a “winter” mode. To be honest, I personally found no significant differences in the behavior of the car at different positions of the “washing machine”. We will consider this “accessory” as a tribute to the “crossover” image. The presence of drive only on the front wheels has a positive effect. Admittedly, only rear passengers can appreciate it: the floor under their feet is flat, with no tunnel in the middle.
We also note that in the GAC GS5 the conditions are no worse for them than in a large business class sedan. Spacious is not the right word. It is possible that the free existence of the rear passengers was ensured by some reduction in the volume of the luggage compartment. This figure here is slightly lower than that of most competitors – 500 horsepower. But I think it’s a pretty fair trade. If you really want to take a lot of junk with you, then you will have to fill the backs of the back seats in every car. In everyday life, the comfort of those sitting in the back is much more important.
Looking at the power on the nameplate of the GS5 engine, you don’t expect anything special from the car. An indication of 137 liters. Of. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine is pre-configured for a “retired” ride. However, the turbine partly saves the situation. Since all supercharged “engines” deliver a decent amount of torque from low revs, you won’t feel like a sleepy vegetable behind the wheel of the GS5. The car’s temperament is quite acceptable for normal driving. In any case, this model drives (subjectively!) much happier than any of the Korean or Japanese crossovers available on the Russian market with a 150 hp engine. Of.
The handling of the “Chinese” brought no surprises. Empty like all “Asians” handlebars and pretty decent rolls in fast corners. But then again, I was happy with the smoothness of the ride: the GS5 suspension “swallows” bumps in the road at a very decent level. Although quite loud.
A small crossover engine in combination with a monodrive allows the car to demonstrate quite a bit of “gluttony”. On the highway in the 100-120 km / h mode, the gas mileage drops to about 7.5 l / 100 km. In the heaviest city traffic jams, it does not exceed 9.5-9.8 liters per hundred.
In the top configuration, the car will cost (according to the RRP!) 2.5 million rubles. Which, by the standards of the current state of the Russian car market, is quite decent. Although before the known events his “price” was much lower. It’s a shame that those times will probably never come back…
