A new version of the resonating accident on the “1905”: did the driver fall asleep?
The accident in Moscow on the street in 1905, in which a truck wrecked a taxi with a driver and a passenger, shocks with its ruthlessness and futility. However, everything is not as simple as it seems at first glance. Why the driver most likely gave false testimony and what happened that fateful morning, the AvtoVzglyad portal explains.

Each event is fatally predetermined by a series of previous actions. And in the case of this accident, the driver’s statement that he “just fell asleep at the wheel” is questionable. Why? Yes, because on a heavy truck transporting building materials, it is difficult to fall asleep and drive through several intersections on the “red”, practically without changing the trajectory of movement. Since the technical condition of the suspension of such cars is far from ideal, even with constant control of the driver they cannot drive straight.

And the brake-fail version doesn’t work either, because every professional driver knows how to effectively slow down a car by downshifting. The video shows that just before the accident, the car accelerates instead of slowing down. And this suggests that the driver was still actively driving the truck. And yet the accident happened.

It is clear that the human factor is to blame, which often manifests itself in a rather strange way. But what exactly happened? Let’s find out – maybe one day it will save someone’s life.

The fact is that when driving a car, a person actively uses his reflexes, which, if used correctly, greatly simplify the driving process. Admittedly, this only happens if these reflexes are controlled by the intellect. When the driver is in a stressful state, he starts to commit illogical actions. In a critical situation, the mind “turns off” and unconscious reflexes give commands to one’s behavior. In addition, in such circumstances, the driver completely loses the ability to judge wisely what is happening.

One of these reflexes is nektonic. In general terms, the meaning of his work – in relation to driving – is that when you focus your eyes on an object, your hands spontaneously turn the steering wheel in its direction. And the higher the level of stress experienced by the driver, the stronger the impact of the nektonic reflex. To the point that all reasonable actions that could positively affect the situation are simply blocked.

So what do we have? The driver, through inattention or intentionally, passed a “red” traffic light, which alarmed him greatly. The brain could not cope with stress, as well as a greatly increased load, and began to act on the principle of a frightened cat, which in a critical situation either stops abruptly and hisses, or, immediately accelerating, runs in a straight line – in the hope everything goes well.

That driver probably “went” according to the second scenario and therefore at each subsequent time made the situation worse, allowing basic reflexes to seize control of the brain. And even after finding a taxi car en route and looking at it, he simply could not take reasonable action, in effect turning into an incapacitated witness, sitting in the driver’s seat of an unsupervised car.

So if you realize while taxiing that you are unable to fully realize everything that is happening around you in real time, slow down. And if you notice an unusual situation or object on the road or near it, do not turn your attention to them, as this could lead to an uncontrolled change in the trajectory of the car and an emergency situation. We always try to look only in a “safe” direction, because only in this case the tonic neck reflex will be an effective help.
