Due to the sharp drop in income, many drivers have chosen not to buy new rims this year, but to straighten or paint the rims they have. It seems that the work is understandable and quite accessible. After them, the “shoes” of the car literally look like new. But no more! In fact, such “alignment” threatens to turn into a serious accident. Why, says the AvtoVzglyad portal.

On the Internet you can find many suggestions for processing and painting alloy wheels. And the craftsmen also praise the so-called grit blasting and the processing of the part with thermoplastic powder coatings. Technologies are called breakthrough technologies. Don’t trust sellers! Such work can lead to an accident.

Some time ago, the Association of European Disc Manufacturers (EUWA) approved a regulatory document on the safety of using “casting”. It immediately prohibits any repair of such products, because interventions in the alloy during heating, welding, brazing and rolling lead to a change in the mechanical properties. In other words, if the wheel falls into a hole and there is a hard blow, the disc will burst. Or cracks appear on the spokes. On which they will grow and eventually the “shoes” of the car will fall apart. If this happens on the road, and even at high speed, a tragedy cannot be avoided.

It remains to clarify the situation with powder coating. It is often done to make the wheels look attractive again. Before the procedure, they are washed and dried, after which the old coating is removed and a new one is applied with a special gun with an electrostatic effect. Then the “cast” is placed in an oven, where it is kept at temperatures of up to 200 degrees to achieve polymerization of the paint.

That is – again strong heating. And also abrasive treatment to remove the old “color”. All this leads to softening of the material and accumulation of residual deformations. The effect is the same as described above: the wheel falls apart on the road. So if you see scuffs and scratches on the disc, don’t rush to paint. Let it be ugly, but safe.
