Information technology is being aggressively introduced to the world of mobility. And a meeting on Moscow roads with a drone is no longer an extraordinary event. For some, these cars are surprising, for others, annoyance. But it turns out that an encounter with an autonomous vehicle can sometimes be the last. The correspondent of the AvtoVzglyad portal decided to deal with the situation, which was almost crushed by such a car.
A meeting with a drone on Moscow roads is far from always safe, even for pedestrians. The author of these lines was amazed at a smart self-driving carriage with its strange behavior. Even scared. And – in a rather trivial situation. But first things first. Ground unregulated pedestrian crossing. Two lanes in one direction and two in the other direction. As I approach the road, I notice that a roadside assistance vehicle is slowly driving in the right lane. Behind him is a black drone with a recognizable inscription on the board. And he definitely sees me starting to transition.
At the same time, in the passing left lane, there are several cars with the minimum distances known in Moscow. Special equipment starts to pull up to let me through. And suddenly the drone makes an active and completely “human” maneuver, changing lanes to the left and being forced to slow down, because at that moment I’m right in front of it. Thank God, a few centimeters were not enough to call the traffic police and the ambulance. And now some theory.
In theory, weaning ourselves off the most unreliable element of driving – a person – should result in traffic becoming smooth and accident-free, reducing the number of accidents to the level of statistical error. In fact, that’s what he was thinking. Such results are expected to be achieved due to the vehicle being equipped with a complex computer system, a large number of different cameras, sensors, lidars, communication systems and actuators. And all so that this marvel of technology can collect and process information about the world around it. And of course to make error-free decisions when relocating. But in any algorithm there is always an imprint of the developer’s personal qualities. And the opinion of an engineer about the behavior of a car does not always coincide with the opinion of a professional driver.
In other words, an unmanned aerial vehicle can acquire a congenital behavioral defect on the road as early as the birth stage. And since the testing of these algorithms takes place not only on closed test sites, but also on ordinary streets, drones are already causing problems. Especially in Russia – against the background of our disorganized and not always observant traffic rules. This happens, for example, when the “autonomous” starts driving too slowly in a traffic jam or when it tries to maintain an unreasonably large distance from the vehicle in front. Often this just causes a dull annoyance to the living helmsmen. But a drone can also cause an emergency.
What I have seen from my own experience, so let’s go back to the situation with the author of these lines. What happened after the drone made a sudden and absolutely “human” maneuver, jumped into the left lane and had to brake for me? Fortunately, the accident did not happen. But I concluded that at the moment when an unmanned vehicle is nearby, it may be worth redoubled attention and not to believe in the infallibility of new technologies.
Like humans, artificial intelligence is very capable of making mistakes. Therefore, the AvtoVzglyad portal recommends not to relax when meeting with an unmanned vehicle. And more than that: treating it as a source of very great danger, being ready for active actions, if artificial intelligence suddenly tries to show an innate desire for the destruction of humanity.
