“Car of the Year” series competitions are held in many states that consider themselves auto powers. By the peculiarities of the organization and the results of these events, one can easily understand which of the countries is at least somehow noticeable in the industry. The AvtoVzglyad portal studied the Chinese version of the popular award.

In China, the results of the local “Car of the Year” competition, which is held “under the wing” of the Xuanyuan Awards, have been summarized. This time, the organizers of the event also celebrated their offspring’s birthday. The Xuanyuan Awards, created by China’s Automotive Business Review and Austria’s EFS Consulting, were created in 2013. The tenth anniversary turned out to be great, even by Chinese standards, and extremely revealing from a Russian point of view.

For reference, let’s say the “heavenly” car of the year was the large Li Auto L9 hybrid crossover – a sort of classmate of the Mercedes-Benz GLS. And in general, hybrids or pure electric trains were in the TOP-10. Moreover, only brands from China, including those that Russia has no idea about: some Avatr 11, RisingAuto R7, Xpeng G9 and Aito M7, known only to lovers of the Chinese auto industry Nio ET5 and Zeekr 001, as well as the Shenlan SL03 sedan in company of the suddenly premium minivan Voyah Dreamer. And also the Smart #1 SUV – because the brand belongs to the Chinese Geely.

And most importantly – 46 (imagine!) “heavenly” car brands took part in the competition. They presented no less than 86 of their new products to the judges of the Xuanyuan Awards this year.

But what about Russia? The presentation of our Car of the Year 2022 took place in September. The domestic jury understood and accepted everything in just 9 months. It took the Chinese a whole year to understand, not like our geniuses of the car market … And who turned out to be our nominees for the award? Entirely foreign brands and models. With rare inclusions of domestic in the form of LADA Vesta and Largus from AVTOVAZ.

Yes, everything is clear: now in Russia there is a peculiar situation in the economy and everything. But the worst is not this, but 46 Chinese car brands fighting for local awards against the background of the total dominance of foreign brands, nominated year after year for Russian national car awards. “This is a fiasco, mate!” – this is how the author of a well-known viral video that has become an Internet meme would comment on the situation in the area called the “Russian auto industry”.

And now let’s add reality to our “fiasco”. To do this, it is enough to recall that almost all “foreigners” whose cars appeared in the Russian “Car of the Year 2022” actually disappeared from our market. Only AvtoVAZ remained. And 46 other Chinese car brands hang over our vast, but slowly changing into a “horseless” country. Which national auto industry can we talk about, comparing Russia with neighboring China?

Our market is about to become a small appendage of the Chinese – if the Russian authorities continue to give in enthusiastically. Meanwhile, the example of the same Iran, which has been living under all kinds of sanctions for 40 years, shows that it is not at all necessary to leave the “Chinese goat” in the national “garden” of the car industry in order to save at least some, but its own auto industry. We run from one extreme to the other again. First we put all our eggs in the basket of the ‘Western’, let’s call it that, car industry for years, and now we are trying to do exactly the same with the Chinese.

The latest example of a brutal blow to our widespread ruins from the “Western” corporations has taught us nothing. We resumed our favorite occupation: we gladly replace our offended face, repelled by the Europeans and the Japanese-Koreans who joined them, under the inevitable blow of the Chinese “brothers forever” in the future. I wonder: when will our “responsible jackets” from the concerned departments get tired of following the same rake? Although what are we talking about: someone, and high officials in any economic and political situation, will always find the opportunity to drive exclusively premium cars. And let the “electorate” pile up in Chinese electric buses…
