At a meeting with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov told what kind of “garden city” he thinks the domestic car market will become in seven years. The AvtoVzglyad portal reviewed the minister’s forecasts.
The development strategy of the Russian auto industry implies an increase in the share of domestic cars in the domestic market from the current 40% to 80% in 2030. Despite the fact that experts are already confident that by 2023 only Chinese cars will account for half of total sales in the country.
— The objectives of technological sovereignty outlined by the president will be achieved, but in the target scenario with more state support, we expect to achieve more ambitious goals already in the first phase — by 2025, namely to triple the production of car parts and double the total production of all types of cars,” said Manturov.
Until the beginning of 2022, the capacity of the Russian passenger car and light commercial vehicle market was at a level of just over 1.5 million vehicles sold per year. In the current one, it will exceed 600,000 units at best. It is useless to make comprehensible predictions about car sales in Russia for the next and following years due to the ongoing SVO and the growing strong outbreak of the coronavirus in China. Under such circumstances, Manturov’s prediction can only be fulfilled in a paradoxical way: if Chinese car brands also leave Russia. In this case, the 400,000 cars that AVTOVAZ plans to produce in 2023 will be enough to occupy the same 80% of the Russian car market.
