Comparative test drive GAC GS5 and Geely Atlas Pro: 50 shades of Chinese
Only a person who is far from modern Russian reality can now say about Chinese cars that they are, as they say, “smeared with one world.” This is far from the truth. You can easily see the disparity of different representatives of the Chinese automotive industry by comparing, for example, Geely Atlas Pro and GAC GS5.

Both of our “test subjects” are front-wheel drive. The lack of all-wheel drive was considered a few years ago as a criterion that prevented the model from being classified as an SUV. And now no one is watching. Body like a “cross”? Or at least a plastic “off road” body kit? So it’s a cross! With the GS5, this approach works 100%. At least in the Russian market, it is presented exclusively in a front-wheel drive incarnation.

Atlas Pro is different. The car is delivered to Russia with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. For the sake of the purity of the experiment, we included Geely’s front-wheel drive modification for the comparison test. The rivals have turbocharged petrol engines, with the same working volume – 1.5 liters each (the only one available for both the GS5 and Atlas Pro for the domestic consumer of internal combustion engines). Admittedly, Geely also has a hybrid configuration option. But this is a completely different “song”, we will not be distracted by it just yet.

With the same displacement, the GS5 and Atlas Pro engines offer different performance. The first engine has an efficiency of 137 hp. s., the second – 177 liters. of. The difference of 40 “horses” is serious.

Therefore, according to the passport, Atlas accelerates to 100 km / h in 10.5 seconds, while his opponent takes about 13 seconds. We used the wording “something about” because there is no exact data about it on the official GAC website. However, the owner of a less powerful “Chinese” should not worry much about this.

In real use, the lack of power may only affect intensive overtaking on the track. In a similar situation behind the wheel of Atlas Pro, you feel clearly more confident. But you can pour AI-92 into the GS5 gas tank without hesitation, while in Atlas Pro, with its higher degree of engine boost, fuel with an octane rating below AI-95 is scary to refuel. In addition to the same engine size, both crossovers are united by one more fact – they both have a six-speed “automatic” in the transmission.

Outwardly, our “Chinese” look very different. Judge for yourself: the design of the “muzzle”, the back, stamping on the side panels – everything is different. But the most important thing is the profile view. The slope of the pillars, the different window line … At Geely, the rear pillar of the body is generally disguised as a continuation of the rear door window. In general, it is difficult to say which of the compared cars seems more beautiful. The exterior of the GAC is closer to the traditional perception and Geely can be called more fashionable. To each his own, as they say.

As for the interiors of crossovers, here their division into “classic” and “advanced” styles has been brought to a very high level. Yes, the GS5 has been in production since 2020, while the Atlas Pro was only introduced in 2022. I don’t think Chinese designers have jumped that far in a few years. Although, who knows…

However, here are some facts about the interior of these cars. “Dashboard” GAC – with an arrow speedometer and tachometer and a large color display of the trip computer in between, while Geely’s dashboard is fully digital. The GAC has a standard rectangular touchscreen multimedia system with a fairly modest set of features and a distinctly “Chinese” design. At Geely, a similar part of the interior is elongated in a horizontal plane, has a complex shape and a modern, completely “European” design. Against the backdrop of a rustic GAC, Geely unequivocally wins in this “nomination”.

Further. “Automatic” gear knob: The GS5 has a classic lever, the Atlas Pro has an elegant joystick. Well, the leather trim of the interior of both “crosses” is free, free. Although the GAC will, admittedly, have a bit more plastic. But from the point of view of driver ergonomics, the “old school” GAC was more to our liking. First of all, the steering wheel. The Atlas Pro falls a little short on the scope of adjustment of the range in my opinion. He would have a few more inches of movement “on his own”!

Second, the pedal assembly. You sit behind the wheel of the GS5 and do not even think about it: the right foot itself rises as it should, and while driving you do not think about its position. Atlas Pro seems to have the pedals on the same level and their location (apparently) is quite normal. But when riding, you often catch yourself thinking that you constantly need to twist your leg in some way – to transfer it from pedal to pedal. This feeling is hard to put into words, but the pedals in Geely are a bit uncomfortable, or something. Of course, you can get used to everything, but is it necessary?

As for crossover handling, the Atlas Pro can certainly be said to be more controllable. Easier and more accurate (though not ideal) response to steering wheel manipulations, rolls less in turns. The GAC’s suspension and steering are looser, or something. And Geely’s brakes are clearly more powerful. But at the same time, some are too sharp, react too nervously to pedal actions. Personally, I’d cross their power with the logic and predictability of the GAC brakes – it would turn out to be close to ideal.

In conclusion, we cannot say anything about the prices. The most expensive front-wheel drive Geely Atlas Pro with an “automatic” costs more than 2.2 million rubles. And the “top” GAC GS5 is almost 2.5 million rubles. But the latter has more options: wireless charging for the phone, electrically operated tailgate, sunroof. But he is not so fashionable and clear in management.
