Russian drivers were massively “thrown” through fake car sharing websites

Experts at NTI Avtonet have discovered a sharp increase in the number of phishing sites posing as sources of genuine car-sharing companies. Portal “AvtoVzglyad” tells about a new method of fraud.

– Cases of theft of accounts of car sharing owners are becoming more frequent in the network. Fraudsters create fake websites of well-known car-sharing companies and post favorable conditions for non-existent promotions… The victim is asked to enter their car details, login, password and driver’s license details. We found more than 130 phishing pages from different car sharing companies.

After someone registers on such a site, criminals get a chance to steal shared cars using the account of an unsuspecting victim. Typically, attackers lure “prospects” to their sites and offer all sorts of promotions, discounts, and rates lower than the existing ones, on behalf of genuine short-term car rental companies. Autonet explains that in 2022 the number of fraudulent schemes related to the automotive theme aimed at stealing personal data will have increased sharply.
