Like it or not, the almighty Toyota has given us a thumbs up. This applies both to the cessation of production and to the sale of cars, and to the presence not only in the TOP-5, but even in the TOP-10 of the most popular cars in the Russian market.
Let’s say more: the hour is not even yet, and the Japanese will leave our country forever, leaving their fans with only tears of loss and memories. As it has in fact already happened with compatriot Nissan and the French Renault. Admittedly, the latter is still kicking thanks to the sales of its best-selling Duster, which, by the way, even managed to enter the top five best-selling models in the Russian market in the SUV segment at the end of 2022. However, this phenomenon is temporary. Judge yourself…
However, let’s start with the bestsellers. Thus, the timeless VAZ “villains” of the Niva line, represented by the Legend and Travel models, turned out to be the firstborn of all crossovers and SUVs presented in Russia. Last year, more than 30,000 Russians became owners of these cars. Success was made possible not only by enviable off-road habits and unpretentious handling, but also by a hasty restart of production, flavored with a state aid program.
Following the popularity of the Russian “all-terrain vehicles” with our brother, the Korean crossover Hyundai Creta follows, which managed to please almost 20,000 Russians. And this is more than three times less than a year earlier. Sanctions have shut down assembly production, inventories have been depleted and car prices have skyrocketed. The result was not long in coming.
If we consider that both SUVs of the Niva system shared first place among themselves, and the second, as you already understood, went to Crete, then the third was a real breakthrough. The Haval Jolion crossover not only impressed the market, but also brought decent sales to the Chinese brand. The brand sold more than 15,000 SUVs in our country, which is more than twice as much as in 2021. Adequate price and competent positioning did their job.
The former favorite of the Russians, which gave way to the Chinese Moskvich at its former main factory, sold just over 12,000 units, three times less than a year ago. There is no doubt: if the brand had not faded from Russia, the sales figures would have been much more pleasant. But after dealers run out of stock, the model will leave both the ratings and the market forever.
And here’s another player from the Middle Kingdom, quickly gaining popularity in our country. Last year, about 10,000 people chose the compact Chinese crossover. It is noteworthy that skeptics did not strongly believe in the success of a car with a three-cylinder turbo engine and a “robot”. But the right pricing policy and an exhaustive range of available options played into the hands of the “Chinese”.
Sad and surprising, but this is the first SUV from the Korean brand Kia in our review. Yes, Sportage has long since died out. Although, to be fair, the new generation would have helped him get closer to the tip of the iceberg. Meanwhile, a Russian opts for Seltos – small and relatively cheap. It’s good that you can still find it at dealers. Well, 10,000 cars sold is not a bad result. Again, if you do not think about the fact that the “Chinese” are more actively bought …
