Car junk “for four”: pitfalls of self-buying a car at an auction in Japan
“Right hand drive” again captures domestic roads: more and more car owners are thinking about buying a car from the Land of the Rising Sun without running across Russia. The ability to save money often takes precedence over prudence, which is why many people buy a car “without looking”, that is, at a Japanese used vehicle auction. What this sometimes leads to, says the AvtoVzglyad portal.

If the conversation is about buying a relatively fresh and well-equipped car in the segment of up to one and a half million rubles on the secondary market, then now there is only one way out – JDM cars (“Japanese domestic market”), which are sold in large quantities are imported into the once-closed port of Vladivostok. In this market niche, there is no alternative to the “right hand drive”: amazing, actually factory condition, business class level equipment and low price – thanks to small engines (often in a hybrid version). You listen to the enthusiasm of the owners of such vehicles and you understand: you have to take it!

In marketplaces and online classified sites, the selection of such goodness is astonishing. The only embarrassment is that a typical seller, having already brought a car to Russia, naturally wants to earn a hundred or two thousand rubles on it. But we are not stupid – we can buy a car in Japan ourselves, saving a decent amount on reseller “interest”! The very first immersion in the fascinating world of right-hand drive international trade shows us how it is: with a Russian bank card you pay nothing in Japan. At the same time, you realize that you don’t understand the intricacies of the Japanese used car business. Yes, and you cannot participate in the auction: you need a special accreditation, which you do not have and which is unlikely to appear.

So you still have to contact an intermediary who has one. And use one of the certainly not free ways to “transfer” rubles from your Russian bank account to yen, suitable for payment in Japan. And it turns out that you have to pay for the registration and logistics of delivering an already purchased car from Japan to Russia. Keep in mind: a car can go from Japan to Moscow for as much as 5-6 months. Now that is “logistics”, if this substance can be called such a beautiful word. And do not be shocked by bills in the amount of 400,000-450,000 rubles for the opportunity to see your Japanese new thing under the windows of your Moscow apartment. That’s the reality.

Nevertheless, the whole operation costs less than buying the exact same “right-hand drive” in Vladik. Especially if you take a car with a condition not “for 5”, but cheaper – “for four”. This valuation is usually entered in a “box” in the top right corner of the paper called “auction form”. It is issued for every car auctioned in Japan. The “quadruple” car, as a rule, does not look perfect (this can be seen in the photos attached to the description). But we “don’t drink water from the face, we believe in the conscientiousness of the scrupulous Japanese, who will certainly not plant a pig.” They are responsible for the reliability of the assessment of the machine, if not with their head, then with another necessary part of the body – for sure!

Unfortunately, this confidence is often misplaced. Already the first direct acquaintance with the long-awaited acquisition can hit you on the spot. Dirt and some old spare parts (apparently unnecessary for the previous Japanese owner) in the cabin and luggage compartment of the vehicle are not too bad. Do not be surprised if, for example, the engine of your “four car” turns out to be “killed”, which means a long repair or a complete replacement. At their own expense. Didn’t they promise you a car in perfect condition? So “eat with porridge” this “not ideal”! What is characteristic: there will be no one to claim the condition of the car that arrived from the auction. I bought a car “from a photo” – now suffer from it myself, as you know.

In addition, during the delivery process, the list of technical problems of machines can be reasonably supplemented. When loading and unloading in ports and railway terminals, loaders can virtually crush and bend body parts. And on a sea voyage, your “right hand drive” can be filled with salty sea water and turn into a rotting “drowned man” – long before she first met her Russian “happy owner”.

In general, this is not an easy and not always rosy business – to independently “order” a “high-quality and inexpensive” car from Japan. But if you are ready to play this “roulette” – why not.
