Accidents of the 21st century: why traffic police drones attack civilian cars
The use of drones to monitor compliance with traffic regulations is not new. For example, in the Krasnodar Territory there are even signs warning drivers about surveillance “from heaven”. But the use of such technologies clearly requires both technical and moral sophistication. Training and certification of traffic police officers, in any case. Otherwise, as the AvtoVzglyad portal was convinced, terrible tragedies are not far away …

In the Voronezh region, on the M4 Don highway, a unique accident for Russia occurred: a truck collided with a quadrocopter. On the contrary, the quadcopter literally pierced the truck. On the highway, a drone flew into the windshield of the car, patrolling the highway and the surrounding area. The damage is impressive: the “flying camera” pierced the plywood through and through. “Zhuzhik” descended or flew to the car? And whose was it, which automatically translates to “who will answer”?

Patrolling roads with flying cameras is an old dream of domestic road cops, because such a tool is not tied to one place, sees much more than an ordinary camera, because it is much higher, and can also recover some offenses that are out of the scope of control of the traditional complex. “Oncoming”, “double solid” and further down the list.

In short, the chance of unpunished traffic violations is decreasing, the number of fines issued is growing. However, to date there is no legal justification for flying the drone along the road – the helicopter must hover in a strictly defined place. If, of course, it is a police drone.

In the video you can easily see the model – before us is the DJI Mavic, an ordinary civilian quadrocopter, the cost of which starts at 150,000 rubles. The device can stay in the air for no more than 36 minutes – in the warm season and calm weather – after which it must be “returned” to the ground to replace the battery.

And in winter, with a worn-out battery, Maviks sometimes lose the lion’s share of the charge many times faster, after which they begin to demand an immediate landing. At this time, the operator either relies on his knowledge and skills, manually bringing the UAV to landing, or presses the “Home” button, after which the “gadget” goes “to base” by itself. In addition, he must do this along the track along which he flew to the shooting location.

There are many questions about what happened: who is to blame and pays for the repair of the truck? Or, as in the old rink joke: well, tell me how you overtook, how you cut? There are many strange and unpleasant stories about the police of the southern regions of Russia, but this one is rather an exception. The owner of the truck estimated the damage at 280,000 rubles, which was reimbursed to him the next day by representatives of the Voronezh traffic police.

That is, the local gays not only pleaded guilty, but also reimbursed the costs (surprisingly – very quickly!). Apparently something is really changing for the better in the system. But what was this drone? Is it really the same, multimillion-dollar, in fact it turned out to be the simplest and most affordable “fly”? And again, there’s no reason to investigate embezzlement: the drone belonged to a private individual who could provide police with monitoring services for the area.

It seems that there were no casualties, for which, thanks to the providence and skill of the truck driver, only “the dregs remained”. Firstly, as a regular user of the M4 motorway, I would like some advice on a potential drone strike. Although they flash, they are already quite invisible because drivers live in a two-dimensional space and do not expect attacks from the air.

Secondly, what kind of private person is this, cooperating with the traffic police, and what kind of shooting did he produce? Fines? “Tripod 2.0: Return”? For comments, the AvtoVzglyad portal turned to the operator of the road traffic control system near Moscow, the company MVS GROUP:

“Without knowing all the circumstances,” its representatives replied to us, “we cannot afford to argue and pinpoint those responsible for this incident, but as the operator of the photo and video recording system, we can assure you that such an event simply impossible in the Moscow region today or tomorrow. Quadcopters are currently not used on the territory of the Moscow region, and there are no plans to put such devices into service in the near future …
