Car Theft Challenge on TikTok

This wave of attempts to steal cars using USB cables has been going on since 2021, when the first cases began to be recorded in the United States. These are usually Kia or Hyundai vehicles manufactured between 2010 and 2021 that do not leave the factory with an immobilizer.

According to Cook County (Illinois) Sheriff Tom Dart, most robberies are committed by teenagers. In one case, the call was made by an 11-year-old boy, and like this boy, most of those who repeat this action do not even know how to drive a car.

Kia said its 2022 models are equipped with immobilizer technology. Hyundai has already said that from November 2021, its vehicles will leave the factory with immobilizers installed. The two automakers also said they are working with authorities to provide steering wheel locks to owners of affected vehicles.
