Since the Russian automotive industry has only the past, historical exhibitions become the most relevant. In addition, there are only two auto events left in the country. There are no car dealerships, no festivals, no museum activities. There is the exhibition “Let’s go” (Motozima/Motovesna) and events that Ilya Sorokin, who was known in the past for his “Otdtimer Gallery”, recently embarked on with intense zeal.
The vector of the present time has become a reversal, and on the way back to recent history we have returned to the usual: the complicity of the security forces in every successful business. If luck is important then support, permission, direct interaction with the FSB, FSO, AP is definitely required. Exhibitions of Ilya Sorokin are held in VDNKh at the GON Museum, that is, under the wing of the FSO.
From the beginning of February, pavilion No. 53 opened the exhibition “Design classified as ‘Secret'”, dedicated to the development of government vehicles for top state officials. The most important discovery is the Marussia government. No one knew that the intention of a group of self-centered businessmen was to seriously enter the ZiL passenger car niche.
“Marus” there were two of them, and both in the form of full-size layouts flashed to Sorokin. Quite original and quite balanced limousine Marussia L2 and crossover Marussia Fb, which caricatured the prototype of the Infiniti FX35. Since the owner of the car, Andrei Cheglakov, in no case allowed the possibility of a real car appearing and starting the project, playing dandy, the two black “Marus” had no chance, but the idea itself remains very valuable.
Another interesting car of an earlier period is the work of Vladimir Aryamov – the Moskva limousine of 1949. At that time, there was a fashion for a car layout, and all cars aspired to be like a bus. Therefore, Aryamov’s project looks like a very exciting attempt to combine high-level pathos with an ordinary bus. The project did not reach the state of the layout, but the illustrations presented perfectly demonstrate the development of the idea.
As a material proof of the proletarian attraction to luxury, the first Soviet car of the highest class L−1 is displayed here. According to official figures, only six examples were made in 1933 and none have survived. Covered with the patina of time, with traces of long exploitation and hard fate, the American Buick 32-90 plays the role of the Soviet L-1.
He was taken to Moscow several years ago, removed all references and allusions to America and scrupulously disguised as L-1. Since our car was a copy of the American one, the work was mainly limited to the Russianification of inscriptions and number plates. After that, this vehicle appears in all exhibitions without mentioning that it is just a replica, but not the original at all, thus forming a public opinion about the only surviving original.
On the opening day of the show, there were many respected guests, no less worthy than the cars of power. Head of Department “Design of Transport Means” MGHPA them. SG Stroganova N. Rozanov described the appearance of L-1 on the production line of the Krasny Putilovets plant:
– The biggest problem of our automotive industry is a lack of understanding of who we build …
It is believed that strict cars should be made by men. Therefore, another important discovery of the exhibition was a booth dedicated to Tatyana Kiseleva, an artist from the ZiL Chief Designer Department, who worked on the ZiL-111G, ZiL-114 and ZiL-117 models.
The historicity of Mr. Sorokin’s current vernissage reminded us of the legendary designers who with their skill ennobled the difficult subject of representative cars. Eduard Molchanov, Eric Szabo and his wife, who also knew no one, designer Vera Bondar. And then it should be added that you can view “Design under the heading ‘Secret'” on April 16, 2023.
