Hundreds of thousands of drivers with fake OSAGO policies drive on Russia’s roads

In 2021, the number of OSAGO agreements concluded electronically with “incorrect information” amounted to a minimum of 1,100,000 copies. This means that hundreds of thousands of motorists drive on the roads of the country, who accidentally or willingly obtained a fake “autocitizenship” for which the victim will never receive payment.

Representatives from the Central Bank, the insurance community and law enforcement agencies identify more than 5,000 fraudulent proposals for drafting illegal insurance contracts each year on social networks, instant messengers and websites.

A curious case was when a woman, posing as an insurance broker, “stamped” false policies, and car owners who knew nothing about this gave her 3,000 to 8,000 rubles.

Phishing is also a problem of digital OSAGO, when a driver can apply for a policy online: scammers, creating special sites, figuring out payment card details.

In just 9 months of 2021, Kaspersky Lab experts discovered 56 phishing pages with the word “osago” in their titles. From December 1, 2021, the Central Bank has in principle been given the right to block such sites out of court. But here it is better not to rely on the vigilance of the supervisor, but to be attentive yourself.

Any suspicious details on the site or in “great offers” emails, such as errors in URLs, the presence of typos and the use of foreign elements, incorrect colors in the logos on the site – a reason to think: are they no scammers?
