Autonomous car block Amazon, zooks, announced this Monday (13) the successful trial of a robot taxi with company employees as passengers on a public road, an important step towards launching a commercial service to the general public. The test was conducted in San Francisco, USA, to demonstrate the vehicle’s ability to perform maneuvers in real urban environments, taking into account traffic, road and pedestrian conditions.

The February 11 test between two Zoox buildings at the company’s headquarters in Foster City, California, a mile apart, was part of the launch of a free employee shuttle that will also help the company improve its technology.

“Getting the car on the public road and validating our approach to all the various requirements, including regulatory, is a big step and we wouldn’t be doing it if we weren’t already looking internally at starting business operations.” CEO Aisha Evans told reporters on a conference call.

The Zoox autonomous vehicle can carry up to four passengers, and its innovative design allows it to move in any direction, making it easier to navigate through tight spaces and provide greater safety for passengers.

Amazon investments

Amazon is investing heavily in autonomous vehicle technology in an effort to gain market share in urban transportation. So much so that in 2020 he bought Zoox for $1.3 billion. Evans declined to provide a timeline for the commercial launch, which would require additional government approval.

Zoox CTO Jesse Levinson said the company is cautious about its growth but is still on track to hit 2,500 employees in 2023, up from just under 2,000 earlier this year.
