Traffic police statistics for 2022 showed a decline in the number of cars in the most densely populated regions of the country. The AvtoVzglyad portal got acquainted with the numbers.

Despite a catastrophic contraction in the new car market, the Russian car fleet showed modest growth in 2022, according to police data. At the end of December last year, a total of 60.45 million cars, motorcycles, trucks and buses were registered with the traffic police.

This is only 312,000 more than at the end of 2021. Growth was 0.5%. Note that in previous years this figure was usually at the level of 1.5%, rising periodically to 2%. There are now about 50.6 million passenger cars in the Russian Federation: about 300,000 units more than a year earlier.

Recall that in 2022 only 626,300 of these vehicles were sold in Russia, which is almost 60% less than a year earlier, when the market was at the level of 1,666,780 new cars sold. The shortage of more than 1 million cars was partly compensated by the import of used vehicles into our country. Notably, imports of Japanese RHDs alone exceeded 213,000 units per year.

In terms of regional statistics, according to the traffic police, Moscow’s car fleet has “shrunk” the most in 2022 – by 16,600 units (up to 4.13 million). The Moscow region and St. Petersburg lost about the same amount – 11,000 vehicles each. In the Saratov region, there were almost 8,000 fewer passenger cars last year. In the Krasnodar Territory – by 7300, in the Pskov region – by 5000. But in Primorye, apparently because of the “right-hand drive”, the fleet has grown by 15,000 units. And the Kaliningrad region has grown in this sense – by 9,000 units. Like the Tyumen region, where the traffic police now has 5,300 more personal vehicles. And in Tatarstan, the increase in this indicator was 2,000 units.
