They turned around: how the new EU sanctions will affect the car industry
In honor of the anniversary of the beginning of “interesting times” in Ukraine, in which half of the civilized world is bogged down, NATO countries have introduced the anniversary – the tenth in a row – sanctions package against Russia. The AvtoVzglyad portal analyzes their impact on the country’s car market.

The “forces of good”, namely the United States and the European Union, who regularly throw carefully napalm-soaked tree trunks into the fire of Ukrainian events, have led to another package of economic sanctions against Russia. Tenth in a row. The first Western “bans” – in the spring of last year – have certainly worked powerfully. Because of them, there was even a certain paper shortage in our offices for a few months. And Russian women wiped intimate hygiene products from supermarket shelves. Cars are still rising in price.

But all this turned out not to be fatal, and life somehow goes on. Although in the conditions of the official absence of a whole “bouquet” of European and Japanese car brands and manufacturers of spare parts on the Russian market. Somehow they have adapted after the first “thermonuclear” salvos of sanctions. And now the 10th “European Economy” package arrived on time, combined with the next US sanctions.

Compared to what we received from the “west” a little less than a year ago, this is not even a mosquito bite, but downright unfortunate. No, well, what kind of “genius” came up with the idea of imposing sanctions on the Russian Ministry of Defense and the FSB!? And this is after a whole year of supplies of arms and ammunition to Ukrainians by NATO countries!

But let’s leave comments on this “timely” measure to psychiatrists. It is much more important to us that the new package contains a ban on the export to Russia of electronics, vehicles, machine parts, spare parts for trucks and jet engines, construction products, antennas, cranes, loaders, trucks themselves, semi-trailers, electric generators, pumps, binoculars , radars, compasses and more. Sanctions have also been imposed on Alfa-Bank, Rosbank and Tinkoff Bank. GAZ Group fell under the new restrictions.

Well, how can anyone not remember a friend named Nietzsche! Who said a century and a half (!) ago: “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” In Russia, last spring they officially stopped importing cars and spare parts for them. It didn’t kill us: everything we needed went through Turkey and Kazakhstan. And will apparently continue to come to us via detours. And GAZ cars in Europe have never had a market. The inhabitants of Nizhny Novgorod are not warm or cold from the latest sanctions.

Here are the nuances with banks. In Russia, they both worked and will continue to work. Problems can arise with international settlements. For example, Bank Primorye, which was under US sanctions, has now suspended accepting SWIFT transfers in all directions. The fact is that transactions were carried out through this financial organization to pay for the lion’s share of imports into Russia of used right-hand drive cars from Japan. More than 213,000 such vehicles were imported to us last year.

At some point this company will now clearly “suspend”. But very soon everything works there again. Either transactions do not go through SWIFT, from which most Russian banks have already been disconnected, or, for example, Korean bankers get to work and help the hated Japanese – in a small part, of course. In general, the further, the more innocent the Western sanctions against our country become. And our car market will “spin” more and more sharply in a familiar place, both they and their promoters …
