The Chinese are preparing a “back door” to the Russian car market
About 8-9 years ago, we enthusiastically joked about the “Belarus oysters” that appeared on the shelves of household stores. It is possible that the Russians will soon expect a real “aliexpress” under the brands of our Western neighbor. Also in the automotive segment. The AvtoVzglyad portal analyzes the latest news from China, where “father” Alexander Lukashenko is currently visiting.

The Belarusian Ministry of Economy has issued a message that a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed in Beijing between the Ministry of Economy of Belarus and the Ministry of Commerce of China. This means agreeing on the basic principles of the text of the interstate agreement on trade in services and investment. It also initiates reciprocal market access negotiations.

“Belarus and China will create a free trade and investment zone already this year,” the Belarusian Ministry of Economy officially boasts. And he promises to finally agree everything with the Chinese partners by the end of 2023. All this takes place in the context of the visit of the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko to Beijing.

Wait, reader, shout indignantly that we can’t handle the Belarusian-Chinese problems. This is a superficial approach! There is such a thing as the Union state of Russia and Belarus. Thanks to this structure, the legislation of both countries is largely unified. There is also an almost common economic space. But formally, Russia and Belarus are completely independent countries.

For this reason, and also thanks to the cunning foreign policy of Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarusian economy is still far from being subject to all the sanctions of Western countries that have fallen entirely on Russia. Yes, the Belarusians were also quite “pinched”. But not as tight as we are.

And now it turns out that the Chinese are also going to “stir up” a “free trade and investment zone” in this beautiful country. Despite the fact that the population of the republic is less than 10 million people. Yes, in Moscow alone live twice as many people! In general, the hedgehog understands that China is thus building a convenient “back door” to the Russian market for its companies in Belarus.

Why fence such a garden? Yes, then many respectable (from the point of view of the “West”) Chinese companies seem unable to trade directly with Russia under sanctions. And working through the “leggings” of the Belarusian “free trade zone” may not lead to a very sharp rejection by the Europeans and the United States.

Recently there was information in the media that Volkswagen is trying to ban its Chinese partners from selling cars of the brand to Russia. Something suggests that VW’s European office will not be very outraged by the delivery of “Chinese Volkswagens” to Belarus. Formally, the “sanctioned virginity” is not violated.

And you can close your eyes to the fact that later these cars go directly to the Russian market from Belarus. The most important thing is that the business is running. So we will not be too surprised to learn after some time about the existence of not only Belarusian shrimp, but also about the “Chinese” Passat and Jetta that suddenly appeared in Belarusian forests.
