How crafty car owners make cool sound-dampening wheels
What does a typical car owner do if he is annoyed by tire noise while driving? Either he is raging and suffering, or he is soundproofing the wheel arches and, in general, the interior of his passenger car. Meanwhile, the solution to this problem may lie in a completely different plane. The AvtoVzglyad portal talks about a little-known way of dealing with annoying sounds.

As a rule, car owners “treat” the rumble of the wheels, trying to turn the interior of their vehicle into a “capsule of silence”. The process involves dismantling the interior, pasting the internal surfaces of the body with sound-absorbing material, and then returning the interior to the state “as it was”. Not a cheap or quick process. But at some point someone came up with an almost brilliant idea: what if we put noise suppression in the wheel itself? This is how the technology for sound insulation of tires was born.

It comes down to the following. A layer of sound-absorbing material is glued to the inside of the tyre. To dampen noise and vibrations that occur both when the tire tread touches the roadway and caused by deformations of the rubber itself. Initially, the “shumka of wheels” was, in fact, the fate of individual enthusiasts who expounded the results of their technical creativity for the judgment of the Internet public.

As a sound-absorbing material, they usually used banal construction foam rubber. They glued it to the tire with glue that is more or less resistant to permanent deformations. Surprisingly, after such an upgrade, the wheel was balanced quite normally in most cases. And the noise level of it has really dropped noticeably.

However, after some time I had to visit a tire assembly unplanned – as the foam rubber gradually came off, the balance of the wheel changed and beats appeared. At this point, “wheel sound insulation” has become a completely respectable service offered by tire shops.

They use special self-adhesive strips of soundproofing material and promise that after the procedure the level of “wheel” noise will decrease by 1.5-2 times. And the weight of the tire will increase by only 100 grams, without affecting the balance of the wheel. Tire noise fighters usually even give a five-year warranty on their work: it is believed that during this time the wheel itself is already due for replacement.

“After mounting the parts on the tire, there will also be a feeling of softer (premium) interaction of the wheels with the road surface,” reads a typical advertisement for such a service. In Moscow, it costs about 1000 rubles to stick one wheel. In regional settlements – two times cheaper.

Feedback from real users suggests that it is not possible to feel any premium interaction of “soundproof” rubber with the road, but the noises from the wheel arches really become noticeably less. So – why not use the “shumkov for tires”? Especially if strange noises in the car are your sore spot.
