Wasted effort: deputies want to abolish the transport tax on electric vehicles

Politicians are almost actors. They are sure: if you do not constantly create newsworthy events in the media at all costs, then everyone will forget about you and you will be thrown out of the circle of sworn colleagues who share the power “pie”. So the deputies of the State Duma of the mysterious political artifact “New People” did not miss the opportunity to promote themselves on a fashionable topic – electric vehicles. The AvtoVzglyad portal tells why the next initiative of the people’s deputies is completely unrelated to reality.

“We have submitted a bill to the government for review to abolish the electric vehicle transport tax. Now there are few such cars in the country, so the budget revenue shortfall will not be significant, and the benefits of supporting our auto industry will be much greater,” said Alexei Nechaev, head of the New People faction in the Duma.

The deputy believes that the Russian industry is ready to produce affordable and high-quality electric trains. The AvtoVzglyad portal agrees with the politician in principle. But with one caveat: at the moment and in the near future, the Russian industry is only ready to attach wheels to the car kits of Chinese electric cars, nothing more. Nechaev also told TASS that in order to speed up the process of switching Russian motorists to Chinese “green” cars, it must be made economically attractive. Among other things, with the help of the abolition of the transport tax on such vehicles.

It seems that Mr. Nechaev is simply not aware that the transport tax on electric vehicles in 34 regions of Russia has been zero for a long time. Among them: Moscow, Crimea, Bashkortostan, Buryatia, Altai, Dagestan, Ingushetia, Karelia, Komi, Udmurtia, Krasnoyarsk, Trans-Baikal and Kamchatka territories, Amur, Astrakhan, Belgorod, Voronezh, Irkutsk, Kaluga, Kemerovo, Kostroma, Leningrad, Lipetsk, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Orenburg, Orel, Ryazan, Saratov, Sakhalin, Smolensk, Tula, Ulyanovsk and Yaroslavl regions. In addition, in another 15 regions of the country, very serious benefits for the payment of transport tax are provided to owners of electric vehicles.

It should also come as a great surprise to the New People to learn that the aforementioned fiscal generosity (taking into account prosperous Moscow!) number of such vehicles across the country barely reaches the 24,000 unit mark. A funny figure against the background of the country’s 45 million passenger car fleet. As grotesque as the tax bills of the deputies.
