“Armata” in Ukraine: Russian tank against the German “Leopard 2”
The Russian Armed Forces tested many of the latest models of military equipment during the Ukrainian campaign and are testing them in combat conditions. The AvtoVzglyad portal suggests that the Russian “tank of the future” T-14 “Armata” may well get a baptism of fire in the Ukrainian steppes.

There are no reliable data in the public domain about the use of the Russian T-14 in the course of the SVO. Western media, however, have already reported a few “Armat” at one of the training grounds of the Russian armed forces in relative proximity to the border with Ukraine. They would have been spotted there by NATO’s satellite intelligence service. If they are not lying, then this fact can be considered preparation for testing the latest Russian tank in real battles. After all, another no less new domestic combat vehicle, the Su-57 aviation complex, is used to conduct hostilities.

And why is “Armata” worse? Apparently, she will face not only various modifications of the Ukrainian T-80, T-72, T-62 and other “Soviet” tanks, but also dozens of German Leopard 2. It is rumored that Western countries are planning to bring more and hundreds of Leopard 1. But this is a very old car.

In modern conditions, its destiny is to be a self-propelled gun, nothing more. At one time, almost all the world’s publications exaggerated the topic of sending American Abrams tanks to Ukraine. But it seems it was just information-guzzling. Thus, the German Leopard 2 will have to play the role of the most formidable opponent of the “Armata”.

Considering the technical characteristics of both combat vehicles, we can say that in a duel with the Russian competitor, the German “pussy” will have a hard time. Let’s start with the nutrition. “German” is equipped with a 1500 horsepower diesel engine with a mass of about 55 tons. The Russian tank weighs 48 tons with a similar power unit. Ceteris paribus, a difference of 7 tons can be a decisive factor. Both in terms of the maneuverability and dynamics of the combat vehicle, and in its off-road capability. Or, for example, the possibility of transport over more or less sustainable bridges and viaducts.

“Rossiyanin” is armed with a 125-millimeter gun. “German” – 120mm. At a distance of 2000 meters, the sub-caliber Armata projectile penetrates 1000 mm of homogeneous armor, and the German gun – 750 mm. Thanks to the automatic loader, the T-14 can produce up to 14 rounds per minute. The Leopard 2 cannon is loaded manually, which drastically limits the rate of fire.

But the main structural difference between Armata and Leopard is in the layout of the turret. The Germans have a commander with a gunner in it. Ours is uninhabited. All three members of the T-14 crew are in front of the body of the vehicle. By “removing” the crew from the tank turret, the creators of the “Armata” saved on its armor and were able to “cram” a lot of useful things into it during the battle.

For example, they equipped the car with an anti-tank missile protection system. She detects launched ATGMs using radar and a number of sensors. And knocks them down with special projectiles fired from small mortars. Nothing beats Leopard. In addition, “Armata” is equipped with an electronic warfare station capable of suppressing the work of drones and enemy guidance systems. “Leopard” is deprived of this. It is believed that on the battlefield, the T-14 will have to play, among other things, the role of a control center and integration of other combat vehicles into a single strike force. That’s not what Leopard is about. In general, in a battle between two armored vehicles (ceteris paribus, of course), the Russian model has every chance of winning.

In conclusion, we note that in real combat conditions, a duel between the T-14 Armata and Leopard 2 is an extremely unlikely event. First of all, because tanks in Ukraine are rarely in such conditions. In the vast majority of cases, they are used to destroy strongholds.

And the combat vehicles themselves mainly suffer from infantry anti-tank weapons, artillery and kamikaze thorn. Moreover, there is every reason to believe that if the Russian command introduces the T-14 into combat, it will only be at the stage when the combat potential of the Ukrainian army will finally be broken and the likelihood that the enemy will destroy the Armata to transport. sample is reduced to zero.
