Vladimir Putin ordered the abolition of customs duties on agricultural machinery. This will not only bring serious savings to Russian farmers, but also suggests a very possible option for a “continuation of the banquet”, which will please a large number of motorists. Details are on the AvtoVzglyad portal.

The president ordered – did not propose, did not pay attention,” did not put for consideration, namely, order – to abolish import duties on agricultural machinery, which has no Russian analogues. At the moment, this is an agricultural support measure, but it has no end date and will be introduced indefinitely. The President’s order will surely pass through the bureaucratic machine like a knife through butter – today it cannot be otherwise…

And in the coming weeks we will discover the full list of items that can be purchased without “clearance”. Although parallel import, although direct – does not matter. The most important is the sowing campaign, which depends a little more on it now than a year or two ago. Let’s face it – a lot more.

Technology is technology, it’s a good thing, but what is the “profit” for us, far from agriculture? Are products becoming cheaper or more diverse? Foggy perspective! We are interested in the flip side of this decision: a precedent has been set that will soon simplify customs legislation for cars. Indeed, why not, in this way, at the stroke of a pen, “rejuvenate” the entire Russian fleet at once?

For many years that were “before”, customs stood between a good car and its happy owner in our latitudes: duties made the purchase much more difficult and expensive. This applies to both new and used cars. All of the above was explained by fear of the domestic auto industry: it was necessary to stimulate everything and everyone and build factories in Russia, create jobs and pay bribes to the state treasury. That’s how it is, few people could afford new cars: our annual maximum is 3 million new vehicles sold or 1 car per 470 Russian citizens. So-so stats.

And affordable loans, and once a wide variety, and different government programs — from the “young family” to “turn in the scrap – get a discount” — let’s face it, they had no effect. The most important factor is the price. And it was and remains extremely high for the absolute majority. Today there is a chance to solve this problem, and again with one stroke of the pen. The moment is more than right.

The fact is that today there is a shortage of new cars all over the world: from the “crystal city on a hill” to the most densely populated African villages. Production has never reached pre-pandemic levels – remember, there was one such COVID, from which everyone was somehow cured at once. Fewer machines on the assembly line – the price of each is higher, as production overheads often cannot be reduced proportionally to output.

Whether it’s bins of used cars in the same China or the US, they won’t mind, they will surely agree to hand over for rubles as well as rupees, and for gas and for oil. Moreover, three to one – the manufacturers themselves will not be against: in the absence of goods – cars – you can survive the storm on spare parts and consumables. And to maintain the dealer network, and the office, and connections with opportunities. And when the rhythm calms down, then “with less blood” to return to the long-standing scheme of buying a new – service – trade-in – buy a new one.

The main beneficiaries will be ordinary Russians, who can finally get a decent car for sound money. In addition, the choice will be wide, for every taste and budget. The vehicle fleet is being drastically renewed, the number of accidents is decreasing and road safety is improving. A mutually beneficial option, don’t you think?
