Traffic police cameras will fine owners of electric scooters and couriers

Speaking in the Moscow State Duma, the head of the Moscow traffic police Alexander Bykov said authorities will soon seriously crack down on violators of individual mobility (SIM) traffic rules. The AvtoVzglyad portal does not foresee any major difficulties in identifying such citizens.

It turns out that the city traffic police and the Moscow City Hall are already developing software for police cameras that can recognize the violations of SIM users. After the changes to the traffic rules of March 1, 2023 came into force, Moscow’s sharing companies, it turns out, have already limited their speed limit to 25 km/h. And there can be no special problems with the identification of an intruder using a rented SIM card.

Another thing is the owners of electric scooters, unicycles and couriers who rush along roads and sidewalks on electric bicycles. There are no license plates on such SIM cards and identifying the culprit seems like a non-trivial task. Although Mr. Bykov claims that thanks to the system of total video surveillance of citizens that exists in Moscow, it is possible to document the movements of any person anywhere in the city. With his help, according to the policeman, it is easy to identify the perpetrator.

Recall that the Moscow authorities and the capital’s police regularly report to the media about hundreds of intruders caught using the city’s facial recognition system. In times of coronavirus psychosis, it was used to issue fines to quarantine violators. We will not be surprised if the need to punish SIM owners becomes a trigger for the creation in Moscow of an analogue of the current system in China for imposing fines on all citizens in general, including pedestrians, for traffic violations – with using video cameras that recognize faces. And the first “victims” will most likely be naive nerds, who have now pecked at the convenience of traveling in the metropolitan metro using the Face Pay system.
