Dirty business: who, how and how much earns from car dumps

You can make a profit on a car not only while it can drive, but even after its “death”. And especially because the car is a pile of scrap, which gets a new life after processing. Who, how and how much earns from car junk, the AvtoVzglyad portal found out.

We, like many other things in the social and production sphere, have learned from the Americans how they collected colossal money from car dumps. In the United States, an insane amount of money is made from car junk, not just by the state, but also by private companies working closely with insurers, car rental companies, dealers, auctions, and individuals. Cars that can still be repaired are sent to specialized centers and then sold to new owners. Frank car junk is dismantled for parts. The scrap itself goes directly to recipients of non-ferrous metals. The annual profits of major players in such a business can amount to several billion dollars! Imagine the scale. And how are things going in Russia?

There are about two hundred metal processing plants in our country, while the capacity of one site allows processing about 40 tons per hour, and more than 1000 per day for several years. Of course, the plant never dreamed of such a stream of junk, but the amount of “scrap” that goes for processing is more than enough to bring the artel a solid profit.

Judge for yourself: for one ton in Moscow they give an average of 20,000 rubles, and they buy metal, as a rule, in bulk – from three tons. Smaller buyers sweep away everything they give and in any quantity – from batteries to plug sockets, with no one interested in where the waste comes from. After processing, the price of scrap metal increases by 4-5 times, therefore, depending on the volume, earnings will have to be calculated exclusively on a calculator.

The capital alone sends several tens of thousands of pressurized cars every year. Among them are cars “entirely” by insurance companies, “abandoned” cars that have not found their owner, and cars that are thrown away for other reasons. From three pressed passenger cars, a “bag” weighing about three tons is obtained, which in turn becomes suitable for the manufacture of other metal products. And often for the same automotive industry.

The so-called industrial disassembly technology allows for the second time to use individual parts and elements of the “iron horses”. In addition, specialized companies that specialize in working with car waste can “filter” about 50-70 cars per day, dismantling cars into components needed for different customers and purposes. Rubber products are sold separately, including tires, wire, plastic and batteries. All this is then used separately in new production processes.

By the way, some car manufacturers themselves are involved in such a business, trying to bite off a piece of such a delicious cake. For example, the French Renault once opened the company The Future is NEUTRAL to recycle old cars and reuse a number of their parts. Preliminary estimates put the site’s annual profit at around $2.2 billion. In addition, according to experts, modern vehicles consist of 85% parts that are suitable for recycling after processing. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that both the authorities and private structures have long and tightly mastered this dirty business, not disdaining to rummage around in garbage that turns into gold.
