“Shot in the leg” is canceled: why gasoline in Russia should become cheaper
It turns out that Russian motorists have been overpaying for gasoline for the past 6-7 years. And all because of a stupid standard put in place by officials, either out of some great mind or in the interest of the chemical oligarchs. The AvtoVzglyad portal talks about the opportunity to make fuel in the country cheaper and less dangerous. The authorities can make life easier for petrol producers

Virtually unnoticed by the press, it was reported that Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak had commissioned Rosprirodnadzor to study the possibility of using the now banned monomethylaniline (MMA) as an anti-knock additive in gasoline to raise the octane rating. Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is now widely used in Russia. Once, in 2016, Russia, following the example of the US and Europe, banned the use of MMA.

It only turned out because at that time there was no official confirmation of the safety of MMA for human health. And for MTBE there was such a piece of paper. By now almost all industry experts know: yes, MTBE is slightly cheaper than MMA. However, to raise the octane number of gasoline from 92 to 95, 10 times less MMA is needed than MTBE. The finished fuel will contain only 1%, not 10%. For this reason, gasoline with monomethylaniline eventually becomes 10-15% cheaper!

Due to the use of methyl tert-butyl ether as a standard additive, Russian car owners have overpaid countless billions of rubles at gas stations since 2016. But the most terrible thing about this whole story about the “chemistry” of gasoline (monomethylaniline and methyl tert-butyl ether) is that it most directly affects the health of drivers and passengers. The one percent presence of MMA in gasoline makes it virtually harmless to humans. Don’t drink fuel and it won’t do you any harm!

And MTBE in fuel contains 10%. And, most unpleasantly, it is extremely volatile. For reference: this ubiquitous additive already boils at 55ºС, and the forbidden and “terrible” monomethylaniline boils only at 210ºС. Now remember how hot your car is in the summer sun – sometimes you can burn your hand to the body!

This means that in the heat of the supposedly “safe” MTBE evaporates very intensively. Keep in mind: 10% of your car filled in the gas tank in the summer tends to simply disappear. And we’ve been breathing these fumes for seven years in a row! Well, the octane number of gasoline drops tremendously at the same time. Your car sat in the sun for a day with half a tank of AI-95, and by evening the fuel turned into AI-92. Millions of motorists do not even suspect that in the summer they “feed” their cars not with the recommended “ninety-fifth”, but with “ninety seconds” of low octane.

Yes, Mr. Novak brought up the right topic. But one thing is not clear: why did he do it only now? After all, the harm of the ban on the use of monomethylaniline in gasoline production in Russia was evident to industry experts in 2016, and after all seven years that have passed since then. What prevented the minister from nipting this disgrace in the bud? And which “fried rooster” pecked him now? In general, it is gratifying that the rehabilitation of monomethylaniline presents an opportunity to lower prices at gas stations. At least that’s what I want to believe.
