It is possible that one of the factories left behind by foreign automakers in St. Petersburg or the Leningrad region will get a second life as a springboard for the expansion of the Iranian auto industry into Russia. However, as the AvtoVzglyad portal found out, the final decision on the localization of production of Saipa cars has not yet been made.
– We are negotiating the localization of the production of passenger models of the Iranian Saipa at the facilities of one of the industrial sites in St. Petersburg. But before starting production, we need to see how the Russian market will accept the cars – Quik, Saina and Shahin models. Based on the results of their sales, a decision on localization will be made,” says Evgeny Chizhov, director of strategic development at Best Motors (the importer of Saipa cars in Russia).
He said the start of official Russian sales of passenger cars of the Iranian brand is scheduled for early June 2023. Best Motors has purchased the first batch of 1,000 cars from Iran under a parallel import scheme and is expected to arrive in May.
The process is complicated by the fact that now cars enter our country through Azerbaijan on car transporters, which are clearly not enough for mass deliveries. In addition, the tension in Iranian-Azerbaijani interstate relations is of influence. That is why, according to Chizhov, a route is currently being worked on to send cars from Iran to Russia on ferries across the Caspian Sea.
