The flip side of the coin: how crankcase protection “kills” a car engine.
In Russia, crankcase protection has traditionally been a mandatory option – such a condition was dictated by bad roads. Over the years, both the number of holes in the sidewalk and those who like to go to the river in the summer have decreased, but the custom of covering the lower part of the engine with an iron sheet has remained. But few people know that such “alignment” is not as harmless as it might seem at first glance.

Retrofitting a car is “our everything”, and no regulation can oppose that. Light bulbs and other “music” are trifles: the main thing was and remains crankcase protection. Well, what car can drive at least a hundred meters on Russian roads if the entire engine oil storage is not covered with a thick layer of iron? No matter how much the part costs, there will always be a check mark in this column. Safety is above all!

So it was in the days of the glorious Zhiguli, and so it is today: a thick layer of ice, a mighty pit in the asphalt, a hussar ride to the river and other native entertainments of a domestic driver can end in a puddle of oil, followed, no doubt worthy of a separate story by saving the car. Enough arguments?

Certainly. But on one condition: city roads are regularly slandered by all local anonymous telegram transmitters, excursions are still planned, and in winter the car leaves the ring border. In all other cases crankcase protection – a habit and not much of a useful refinement – is simply not necessary. And what’s more, it’s harmful.

The back of the steel protection of the “basin” is a noticeable increase in the temperature of the engine compartment. The engine, which is already extremely hot in modern petrol cars, gets a heat stroke and the problems start immediately. Of course, it will not come to a curvature of the cylinder head, but other sores are enough for the entire salary. Leaks in crankshaft oil seals, overheating of the gearbox and other problems are precisely associated with the presence of non-original steel protection in three out of four cases.

In addition: an attempt to save money on installation – well, this is sacred, how can it be done without pettiness – can lead to the fact that at the moment of a strong blow not only the protection, but also the crankcase and spar , for which that piece of iron is attached will be creased. Really double happiness! And the mechanics won’t let you lie: stories like that happen all the time. It’s worth it? A habit is a habit, but the world changes, and the machines with it. Roads in Russia have become much better, and car technologies have moved far from their original VAZ classics.

SUVs, which often get off the asphalt and add raisins to their owners’ lives, of course, need a metal plate under the bottom. The impressive ground clearance, among other things, allows additional airflows to cool the engine, which evens out the consequences of installing protection. And even then – it must be regularly removed and washed so that a clay pot does not form under the engine. But why an extra piece of iron for a passenger car? In those places where she spends her life, ordinary plastic protection will do. And the damage from it is many times less than from steel.
