BMW M3 Generations in Drag Race: Which is Fastest?

We probably wouldn’t be exaggerating if we said that BMW’s most famous series is the M. There are six different BMW models in the M Series: E30, E36, E46, E92, F80 and G80. There are major differences between these models, both in terms of design and performance. For example, the E30 M3 has a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine and 200 hp, while the G80 M3 has a 3-liter biturbo 6-cylinder in-line engine with 510 hp.

So which of these vehicles is the fastest? To find the answer to this question, the video performs three different tests: drag race, dock race and brake test. Based on the results of these tests, which model will perform best?

Surprise result in Drag Race

Drag racing is one of the most commonly used tests to measure vehicle acceleration. In this test, the vehicles drive at the same time and try to cover the distance of a quarter mile in the shortest possible time. According to the video, the results of the drag race are as follows:

  1. G80 M3: 11.9 seconds
  2. F80 M3: 12.1 seconds
  3. E92 M3: 13.1 seconds
  4. E46 M3: 13.5 seconds
  5. E36 M3: 14.7 seconds
  6. E30 M3: 15.8 seconds

As you can see, the newest model, the G80 M3, wins the drag race and the oldest model, the E30 M3, comes in last. However, there is only 4 seconds difference between them. This shows how good each generation of the BMW M3 is.

Surprising winner in Docking Race

The docking race is another test used to measure vehicle reaction times and acceleration. In this test, the vehicles travel at different speeds and approach each other. According to the video, the results of the docking race are as follows:

  1. F80 M3
  2. G80 M3
  3. E92 M3
  4. E46 M3
  5. E36 M3
  6. E30 M3

This time, the newest model, the G80 M3, comes second and the oldest model, the E30 M3, comes last again. But surprisingly, the F80 M3 wins this test. This is because the F80 M3 is lighter and has better torque distribution.
