In the filing cabinet of the Arbitration Court of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, a case appeared about the claim of the GAZ automobile plant against the Russian branch of Volkswagen AG. The amount of the claim is specified in the amount of 28.4 billion rubles. Details about the case are not given. Earlier, the arbitral tribunal had already committed an offense to consider another claim by the Gorky Automobile Plant against the German company. In it, the domestic automaker demanded to recover from the “Germans” 15.6 billion rubles in losses incurred as a result of the cessation of assembly of Skoda cars at GAZ facilities.
In that case, the court seized the assets of Volkswagen Group Rus LLC, including the VW plant in Kaluga, as an interim measure. Last week, representatives of the Germans persuaded arbitration to overturn the company’s arrest. This again made it possible to sell it to the Russian car dealership Avilon, which, as some media assure, is doing this in the interest of the Chinese Chery, which plans to assemble its cars in the Kaluga region. Another and even more impressive lawsuit from GAZ threatens another arrest of the VW plant in Russia and the freezing of the plans of the Chinese.
According to the German publication Spiegel, Siegfried Wolf, the ex-chairman of the GAZ Group board and former head of the Magna Steyr concern, previously claimed control of VW’s assembly facilities in Russia. Allegedly, he even turned to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, for support of the Kaluga production project (together with GAZ) of cars under the Volga brand. Total production volumes were planned at the level of 270,000 cars per year. In this case, Wolf asked for an investment of 60 billion rubles. The new GAZ lawsuit against the Russian Volkswagen may be related to this situation. It is characteristic that the GAZ Group refused to comment on the AvtoVzglyad portal.
