The unbelievably obvious: why sales of Chinese pickups suddenly rose in Russia
Sales results sometimes yield very interesting tricks. It seems that utilitarian trucks have never been in great demand in Russia, and suddenly – once! Pickup trucks from the Chinese brand Great Wall suddenly went up. Yes, in what! Portal “AutoVzglyad” tried to understand the magic of numbers.

When Great Wall introduced its Haval brand to the Russian market, the company’s leaders decided they had grabbed fate by the beard. Yet they were the first among the rest of the Chinese to think of declaring their cars premium. Well, of course, the price was set accordingly – according to the highest bar.

While this trick didn’t work for a fool, the Havals’ margin was apparently very attractive. It is therefore not surprising that modest workers – all-wheel drive frame pickups – received attention according to the residual principle. After all, all Russian drivers were crazy about crossovers, and only a few maniacs from the auto industry were interested in trucks.

Explosive growth?

So, both Wingle 7, which came to our country in November 2020, and Poer, which went on sale in June 2021, were somewhere on the border of visibility in a long line of brands and models presented in Russia. However, after the massive démarche of foreign brands in March, these hugely “scared patriots”, even outsiders who risked staying in the market, got a chance for some growth.

This is exactly what happened with Great Wall pickups. The cars, forgotten by their own manufacturer, suddenly fired. According to the results of the 1st quarter of this year, their turnover, according to the data of the Association of European Businesses, grew by an incredible amount of 688%, and in March the overall growth was 1264%. True, in quantitative terms, everything looks much more modest – only 1032 cars in three months.

More cautious in its assessments and less trusting of car manufacturers, Avtostat, which judges the success of companies not by manufacturers’ reports, but by new car registrations, gives even less enchanting figures. According to the bureau, pickups with the “Great Wall” decal managed to find 833 owners for a couple during the quarter, which was +531% compared to the same period last year.

Well, it’s how to watch

Even this result isn’t bad if you don’t factor in last year’s catastrophically low base. In reality, however, everything is not so rosy. “What is Captain Wenzel compared to the magnificence of nature?” And compared to the splendor of the Great Wall, it even loses ground a bit, which may seem surprising. If in January the brand occupied 0.6% of the market, then in March – 0.4%. Half way down. And the situation will not improve in the near future, since sales of the Wingle 7 pickup, which honestly contributed to the sales volume, have been discontinued since April – 377 cars of this model were sold in the quarter.

By the way, an interesting point is connected with this, which one way or another characterizes the behavior of Chinese car companies in the Russian market. Of the two pickups sold in Russia, the company removed the cheaper one – the difference between them was about 600-700 thousand rubles. And in the near future a new car will come to us – Poer King Kong, which is 24 cm longer than the regular Poer and is equipped with a plug-in all-wheel drive with a rear differential lock and a reduction gear. Now the starting price is indicated at the level of Wingle 7, but after a while it will surely overtake its shorter counterpart.

For example, cheaper cars are washed away unnoticed and replaced by more expensive ones. In fact, no one doubted that the Chinese would not please us with cheap cars, but would try to get maximum profit from the unpleasant situation in which our auto industry largely collapsed due to the fault of their “talented” leaders.
