According to a study recently published in the journal Earth and Space Science, satellite data has been used to discover 19,325 new seamounts, On the Earth. Currently, the number of known mounds on the seabed has reached 43,454.

The study was published by oceanographers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the University of Hawaii and Chungnam National University, including mapping of active and extinct volcanoes as well as isolated mounds. The Kim-Wiesel catalog published in 2015 contains information on 24,643 mountains in the ocean. With new data and the help of advanced technology, the current number of known burial mounds has nearly doubled.

seamounts

To find mountains, explorers used satellite data that measure the height of the sea surface. With the Earth’s gravitational motion, the topography of the seafloor changes in an effect known as “sea piling”. Based on the differences in these altitudes, researchers can estimate the presence of seamounts as well as their height.

The discovery is interesting and expands our knowledge of the seabed. It is estimated that only 20% of the seabed has been mapped by mankind. The researchers even intend to conduct an “ocean census” to find new species at the bottom of the sea. The ocean mountains provide habitat for marine life as well as new opportunities for deep-sea mining (rare minerals abound). Finally, the researchers also believe that a better knowledge of the ocean floor helps scientists better understand the functioning of tectonic plates as well as the Earth’s geomagnetic field.

No doubt it is very interesting to see how little we know about what exists at the bottom of the sea. Of course, several types of unusual marine life are hidden in the depths.
