Maritime authorities launched a search operation in the North Atlantic, where the ship crashed and all five people on board were killed. The diver’s wreck was discovered at a depth of about 3,810 meters underwater, several hundred feet away from the wreck of the Titanic, where he went to investigate.
Why did Canada start an investigation?
Cathy Fox, chair of the transportation committee, said the investigation was conducted in Canada because the ship was flying a Canadian flag and was leaving a Canadian port. She acknowledged the international interest in the case and expressed the commission’s intention to cooperate and share information with other relevant agencies, such as the US National Transportation Safety Board and the US Coast Guard, in accordance with Canadian law.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police also announced that they are interested in the case, launching an investigation to determine whether a full investigation is necessary. If signs of potential criminal or legal violations are identified, a thorough investigation will be initiated.. It should be noted that the initial search and rescue operation was led by the Coast Guard and involved a significant international effort, likely resulting in substantial costs.
However, the body responsible for the comprehensive investigation covering many countries has not yet been determined. OceanGate Expeditions, which owns and operates the Titan submarine, is headquartered in the United States, while the submarine itself is registered in the Bahamas.
Problems with the submarine “Titan”
The investigation is expected to focus on the Titan submarine. The ship’s unconventional design and its creator’s resistance to the independent safety checks prevalent in the industry are alarming.
OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush expressed his concern at what he sees as stifling regulations that hinder progress and innovation. Rush, on his blog on the company’s website, opposed asking external organizations to approve each innovation before testing it in real-world conditions.
Specifically, “Titan” Not registered as a vessel in the United States or international safety regulatory agencies. In addition, it has not received a classification from the maritime industry group, which is responsible for determining the standards for the construction of the ship’s hulls.
While some aspects of the investigation have been clarified, such as the likely timing of the accident, many questions remain unanswered. Recently, the US Navy analyzed the acoustic data and found an “anomaly” similar to an internal explosion (explosion aimed at the center of the object) near where Titan was operating when communications were lost. However, these data were not conclusive and the Coast Guard continued to search.
Given the seriousness of the situation, a series of lawsuits are expected to follow. However, legal complexities and jurisdictional issues can hinder the success of such claims. Former Oceangate employees and former passengers raised concerns about the submarine’s safety, raising possible legal ramifications for the incident.
