The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency has completed its two-year study on Fukushima’s cooling water. Its volume is so large that it is enough to fill 500 Olympic swimming pools. Experts determined that if this water were to be slowly discharged into the ocean, it would have “negligible radiological impact on humans and the environment.”

Against environmentalists: what are the risks

The controversial decision has garnered a lot of attention over the past few years, and experts still debate the risks associated with the decision. Environmental activists such as Greenpeace believe that the company that owns the nuclear power plant is not doing enough to clean up residual radioactive material from the water. But Japan says it’s doing its homework and trying to put people at ease.

At a press conference in China last month, Japanese officials said the water has been filtered for years to remove most of the radioactive elements, except for the tritium hydrogen isotope, which the report says is difficult to separate from the water.

Despite these assurances, there were many who were concerned about this decision. Chief among these critics is Beijing, which accuses Japan of “total confusion and misleading the public” and of hastily releasing its report to the UN.
