A rare dwarf star has caught the attention of NASA and Caltech astronomers. The star ZTF J203349.8+322901.1 was named after the Roman god Janus, who represents duality and transition, due to its unique characteristics. According to scientists, Janus is a rare two-faced dwarf star.where each side represents a different composition.

The results of the study were published in Nature, one of the most famous scientific journals in the world. Janus was discovered by the ZTF (Zqicky Transient Facility), and its composition was analyzed at the WM Keck Observatory in Hawaii. According to the scientist Ilaria Caiazzo of the California Institute of Technology and one of the main people in charge of the study, one side of a star is made up of helium and the other half of its surface is made up of hydrogen. Below you can see Caiazzo’s video explaining more about the curious phenomenon (video in English but with subtitles, just click on the CC option).

According to the researchers, the difference in composition may indicate a star in the transitional phase – so it was named after Janus, the god of duality. The data, published in Nature, points to the possibility that the star has been in the process of transforming its surface for millions of years. Caiazzo notes that the study of Janus should help us better understand how “compressed space objects” work, and the results of the research can help humanity better understand the mysteries of the cosmos.

In addition to the possibility of a transformational process, Astronomers do not exclude that the effect is caused by the magnetic fields of the dwarf star.. At this point, it’s hard to say for certain what actually led to the unusual phenomenon, and researchers at NASA and Caltech are hoping to find more bilateral dwarf stars to better understand how they work. For those who love space and want to know a little more about the universe, they will certainly cheer for the explorers so they can deepen their research on the subject.
