For the first time in 70 years, open spaces that were long submerged under the waters of Dnipro gave researchers unprecedented access to the historical and archaeological heritage of the island of Khortytsia. The coast of the island is known for its historical significance, with many monuments witnessing centuries of human activity. However, some of these priceless monuments have fallen into disrepair, requiring urgent efforts to save and preserve them.

What was found in the reserve

The special team of the “Khortytsia” National Reserve conducts diligent daily research to preserve these monuments and collect archaeological material. Their efforts have produced remarkable results in recent weeks. found several hundred archaeological artifacts, including metal, ceramic and wood products. Among these finds, more than 1000 pieces of ceramic products were carefully excavated.

Recently discovered archaeological sites can be conditionally divided into several groups:

1. Ceramics through the ages. Finds range from Eneolithic artifacts dating back to 6,000-5,000 BC to objects dating back to the 19th century. Potsherds and molded pottery sherds, including components such as crown, handle, pedestal and handle, constitute a large part of these finds. Other ceramic objects include pipes, sinkers and spinning wheels.
2. flint tools. This group of finds includes flint used in ancient tools for hunting and crafting, as well as medieval firearms with locking triggers.
3. metal works. Findings made of metal covering a wide range are of great interest. Coins, in particular, have been identified as important chronological markers that provide important information. In addition, a significant part of the collection consists of relics from the Cossack period on the island of Hortytsia, such as rifle and pistol bullets, belt buckles, weapon parts and other attributes.
4. Fragile glass remains. Although fragile, objects made of glass have also been found, although less frequently. These pieces include the remains of medieval bottles and even glass bombs.

All discovered archaeological finds are carefully processed in the research office. This process is accompanied by careful documentation and site descriptions that will ultimately contribute to a comprehensive archaeological report.

Emergency expeditions save sights

Given the evolution of the situation, the focus of research and conservation efforts has changed. In addition to the simple preservation of monuments, the task now includes the urgent recovery and maintenance of archaeological sites. In response, emergency expeditions were launched, responding to reports from local residents who found artifacts along the coast each day.

These initiatives encompass both invasive and non-invasive archaeological methods, including digitizing finds. In addition, a comprehensive approach that includes education initiatives and public participation is integrated into the current work.
